I think the "Monster" they refer to in the story is like the main characters fears/worst nightmares. It follows him around, but as soon as he forgets about it/slowly overcomes it as time passes, the "Monster" gets smaller and smaller, and eventually disappears. I think this because when I looked at the last few pages of the story, I saw that the "Monster" got smaller over time, resembling the fact that the main character is finally letting go of his fears/forgetting about his nightmares.

I found out that the "Monster" that Conor was having nightmares about, was actually the yew tree in the middle of a graveyard/church. He had only told his Mom about it, and no one else. I had also learned that Conor's mom had cancer because she says that her Mom is going to give her some of her old wigs. This all takes place in/at Conor's house, and the main conflict of this whole part that we read was definitely when the yew tree came to life and threatened to feast on Conor.

In this section that we read today, the chapter "School" mainly focuses on Conor being bullied by Harry and his "helpers" because his Mom had cancer. But his childhood Lily, tried to interfere with the fight, getting in trouble by Miss Kwan, because she had pushed Sully into a bush. Lily had revealed the truth to Miss Kwan, but Conor declined the fact that it wasn't true. So, instead of the true bullies getting in trouble, Lily got detentions for the whole week. The chapter "Three Stories" talks about how Conor was hallucinating/dreaming about the yew tree Monster. The Monster asks him to meet him outside, and is going to tell him 3 stories. He demands Conor to tell him his ONE story. About why the Monster was there, and why he kept dreaming about him.

First of all, Conor was very unforgiving of Lily. He had been mad at her because she tried to prevent Harry and his friends from bullying him. Even though they have been friends for a very long time, Conor has been more aggressive towards her because of the things she says. She wants him to apologize for lying to Miss Kwan about Harry, but he didn't give in. She also mentions the fact that they're "making allowances for them" because of what his family is going through. Because of this, Conor snaps back at Lily, then leaves her behind.

I think the Monster is going to help Conor like he did in the past with the prince. When the prince had tried to overthrow the queen, the Monster will do the same thing, preventing Conor from trying to do something he'll regret. Like his personal guardian. Maybe Conor will try to prevent his Mother from going to the hospital because he says that "She already has medicine for her pain" and she's totally fine. And maybe Conor's mother also had a connection with the yew tree when she was close to Conor's age in some way because she said that when she was gone, she wanted Conor to keep an eye on it and to make sure it's still there when she gets back. But I think the biggest thing the Monster can do is give Conor's mother his berries that grow on him because he says that "It can cure almost any ailment man suffers from, mixed and treated by the right apothecary".

I think Conor's grandma reacted the way she did out of pure grief and shock. She broke the last thing in the room because she needed something to let out her emotions on. I feel this is because as it showed later in the scene, she was heard weeping. She probably didn't mean to do it, and is now realizing everything was gone/destroyed now.

The third tale that the Monster had told Conor was like what he was experiencing currently. I know this because Conor was being ignored or was counted as "invisible" to all of his classmates. Conor also had his own version of the story when Harry, his bully, walked away from him after telling him that he "No longer sees him". Conor thought that he was dreaming about the story, but in reality, he was hurting Harry without anyone's help. Not even the Monster. Instead of keeping his mouth shut, Harry decides to keep blabbering on and on, trying to make Conor even more mad than he already was at the time. At the end of it, the Monster had finally made Harry "see".

For the first tale, it was when Conor had his encounter with Harry and his friends, and Lily. Lily had seen Conor getting into this little squabble with Harry, so she stepped in, trying to stick up for Conor when he couldn't. But when Miss Kwan came out, and asked Conor about what was going on, he had lied about Harry bullying him, making Lily take the blame, even though she was innocent in the situation. In the second tale, the prince had tried to frame his wife's death, making it seem like the queen did it, because he had despised the queen.

Conor's experiences connect to tale two because, like in the tale, Conor is like the Apothecary because he had grown bitter about the fact that he had to move in with his Grandma since his Mom was in the hospital. His Dad is like the parson because he hadn't given Conor the choice to live with him. It's either Conor could go and live with his Dad, or he would refuse to live with his Grandma, and not have any other place to stay.

Conor was just like the "Invisible Man" because it was almost like he wasn't there. People at school ignored him, until there was Harry, who picked on and kept picking on until one day, at the cafeteria, as Harry left Conor there, Conor paced after him, confronting him finally. He took some blows to Harry, like the "Invisible Man" in the third tale. Conor had thought the Monster was helping him in fighting against Harry, but in reality, it was really just him.

I honestly think the movie of "A Monster Calls" meets my expectations because it tells the story better. Although, some parts weren't accurate to the book because the Mom seemed okay, and the biggest thing that stuck out about her was she had hair. Something that was also different about the book & movie was that in the very beginning of the movie, Conor had the nightmare about the Monster taking his Mom. But in the book, the nightmare Conor had about his Mom being abducted by the Monster happened in the very end, although the way they put it made Conor think it was real, and that he had to confess the truth to wake up from it.
