To me social emotional learning is learning how to behave appropriately depending on the situation.
As a teacher it is learning what a student needs to understand to be more successful.
A perfect example of this is asking for help. Many students will be too shy to ask, others will start being disruptive to others when they don't know how to work through a problem. As a teacher, I try to provide resources and help students learn how to refer back to these and be more independent.

- Robert Day

To me, SEL is about building empathy with students and helping them connect emotions to their experiences, as well as how to help them manage their thoughts and emotions. In essence, I feel like SEL gives students the power to name and tame their feelings to help them overcome their challenges and struggles. Growth mind set is the idea that we can always still keep learning and that we can always achieve more. I usually use stories that include easily relatable experiences for students to connect to their background. Often this lets students build common ground for group work so that students can learn to work through things with their peers.

Growth mindset allows students to understand what they are doing and know they are in control. It gets them away from the "I just can't " fixed mindset. Learning self-regulation such as deep breathing or taking a break resets their minds and again gives them control over their emotions.

1. To me, SEL means helping students learn how to cope with their emotions day by day. 2. What I know about self regulation and growth mindset are the stop and pause moments (I think) and the power of YET. 3. I have tried to practice SEL during my student teaching, during distance learning last year through google form check ins and this year by having SEL writing prompts and SEL assignments whenever possible. They truly need to understand more positive self talk and how to push through and overcome obstacles and learn rigor.

SEL means to me being able to understand my emotions and how to navigate through my emotions in various environments. Self -regulation to me and growth mind set is being able to apply what I identify and am aware of. Yes, our site is doing it as a team for 0 period.

Social-emotional learning to me is giving students the tools to better handle their emotions and express themselves in a positive way. I already know that a growth mindset helps students focus on the positive. I have had experience working with the Positivity Project and doing a different topic each week that promotes positivity and traits to strive for.

I've done some research/read articles/books. It's hard to watch kids struggle rather than catering to them (both students and kids at home).

To me, SEL means learning how to be aware of your emotions and feelings, so that you can make decisions more mindfully, instead of letting those emotions control your decisions. It's also about developing social skills and empathy for others. I have previously taught some SEL lessons (but have a lot to learn!) and through that I know some self-regulation tips. I'm also fairly familiar with the concept of growth mindset and have taught units on it with my students before.
