BUS112-Corporate Culture
I believe Chick-fil-A has a positive culture. With a 60 year history, founder Truett Cathy, endures on a culture that values people above everything else. Due to this type of culture they have experienced more than 10% sales increase almost every year since launching in 1946. Truett Cathy based his company on Biblical principles; “servant leadership” and “To glorify God by being a faithful steward” are just two of his positive influences to all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A. When standard ethics are enforced and demonstrated by leadership and management, employees tend to follow, also creating an enjoyable atmosphere to work in. And with Chick-fil-A, it doesn’t stop with employees; every customer that walks through the door is treated with honor. Truett’s goal is to think bigger and better, to strive to build a culture that improves the lives of everyone it touches.

Ferrell, O.C.; Fraedrich, John; Ferrell, Linda; Business Ethics, Twelfth Edition

Kruse, Kevin, Forbes, December 8, 2015 edition

I think Google has a positive corporate culture. They understand that when an employee is happy, it increases productivity and creativity. Google has always made an environment where employees are free to express themselves. They offer employee perks for working and have a clear idea of their values and goals. Another one would be Southwest Airlines. They believe employees happiness comes first before customer satisfaction. They have always tried to do what is best for everyone. As far as a company with a negative corporate culture, I think Uber could be one. So many horrible things have happened more lately with the employees. I also don't think they have their employees as top priority. Hopefully they can work to create a better company not only for their employees but for the other stakeholders.

I think of Google as a great example, because i know a few people who work for Google and are always talking about the ways in which they take care of their employees and their employees families. It's easy to think of them as this big, bad company that controls alot of different things but according to a few of my friends, its really pleasant to work for them as a company. They make things easy and fun and let people speak their thoughts. A company who has negative corporate culture has to definitely be Amazon, mostly because of the poor way they tend to treat their warehouse workers. I'm sure everyone has seen all the bad things that happen in their warehouses, how workers are overworked and how they are not properly taken care of or rewarded for their work. I've included some of the articles that highlight some of these instances.
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/aug/06/amazon-workers-minimum-wage-injuries-working-conditions

I believe that Costco has a good culture, because of their values. They like to operate by the motto, "do the right thing even if it hurts.'" It says a lot about a company that they pride morals over everything else. On top of it, they make sure all of their employee's feel like they have a voice and treat them like family, and don't make them feel as if they are just a number helping the company make a buck. A company with poor company culture I feel is Family Dollar. They put a lot of stress on their employees with super tight budgets, long hours, and low pay. Often their managers are under qualified as well, making the environment even more stressful for that manager and the employees that work under them.

When I think about companies with positive corporate cultures I think about Netflix. They allow more freedom and responsibilities for their employees and reward high performance. I always like working for companies that sees their new hires as investments.
CenturyLink has a horrible reputation when is comes to their employees and customer service alike. I believe this is a great example of how a corporate culture should not be. They even went as far as to suspend all merit-based raises for all employees
(Stebbins, Comens, Sauter, Stockdale, 2018).

Stebbins, S, Comens, E, Sauter, M, Stockdale, C (2018, Februrary 12) Bad reputation: America's top 20 most hated companies.

Darden has a decent corporate culture that doesn't get any credit. Darden owns restaurants like the Olive Garden and Longhorn to name their top two. Darden offers supplemental insurance to employees when they first get hired until open enrollment. They also offer up to 120% match on 401K to all employees that have been there for 1 year. They donate any extra food to food banks and their food handing standards are above health department regulation.
Walmart has a bad corporate culture. It is almost common knowledge that Walmart under paid their employees forcing many of them to apply for Welfare, Snap and Medicaid. Government aid is not a benefit, but $1.2 for every $1 in a retirement plan is.

Quicken Loans is known to have positive corporate culture. The owner, Dan Gilbert takes pride in making everyone that works for him feel like they are a part of a team. He developed the ISM's which is a way of life for all of his companies and he trains every person hired personally. Some examples of these ISM's are: "do the right thing", "every guest every time, no exceptions, no excuses" and '"we'll figure it out." These ISM's empower the team members who in turn empower the clients. "Quicken Loans fosters an employee-centric workplace by creating good jobs, paying living wages and providing great benefits. It also prioritizes long-term career paths. This has led to high employee performance, low turnover and strong loyalty and morale, as evidenced by both internal and third party surveys."
https://www.forbes.com/sites/jimpurcell/2019/12/10/quicken-loans-committed-to-employee-wellbeing-and-strong-communities/#2cc783d84c70

I think Chik-fil-a has a positive corporate culture. They are values based and it shows. Every person you encounter at their various locations has a positive attitude and you always receive the best service. When companies have negative corporate cultures it usually shows when you first step foot into a location. Their employees are paid very well and also they are not open on Sundays because they're a christian organization and they allow their employees to attend church with no repercussions.
A negative corporate culture is Walmart. From underpaid employees and discrimination to not allowing unions. Walmart has had a bad reputation on this front for a very long time. The high ups in the company are compensated very well while those who need health benefits are kept from making the bare minimum in hours per week to be considered eligible.

In my experience, Goodwill Industries has one of the best corporate cultures today. Their mission of providing employment and training to individuals with developmental delays has resulted in an organization where those who would likely struggle in the everyday world can be a functioning member of society. As for a negative culture, there are many! The first that comes to mind is Frontier Communications. As a company, they are mired in the past and struggling to keep afloat. They have failed to adapt to modern technologies and foster an attitude of "it's not our problem". Any interaction with them becomes a laborious, time consuming effort that pushes customers and employees away.

I think that Goodwill Industries has a great corporate culture. Their mission statement of providing training and employment to those with disabilities and developmental delays to functioning members of society is phenomenal.
I think that MCTV has a horrible reputation for poor customer service. They offer deals and free internet to new customers only and not to current customers who may be struggling especially in this time. They are quick to donate to certain events in Massillon but do not seem to really care about helping their current customers. They have a monopoly for internet and cable and phone services in the Massillon area as no other providers are allowed in.
