• enabled Hitler to govern as Chancellor without reference to the Reichstag 
• no constitutional restriction on his personal authority or that of the party he led 
• August 1934: Hitler Becomes President following death of Hindenberg
• 92% of the electorate expressed their approval of Hitler’s extension of power
• officially adopts the title Fuhrer (meaning leader) in recognition of his supreme power 

Genuine Support for  Nazism

• Germans protected their position in society by joining/supporting the Nazi party 
•  bureaucrats acting out of self interest who allowed Nazism to flourish 
• In first year of Hitler’s Chancellorship, Nazi party grew from 2.5 million to 4 million+
• teachers, doctors, professors, priests and pastors were among the strongest supporters of Hitler and Nazism  = lead by example 

Genuine Approval of Hitler

• regarded Hitler as a saviour + great war conquests 1939 - 1942 = increased prestige 
• AJP Taylor - Hitler was the most popular leader of any European country in modern Europe 
• success of economic policies i.e. reduction of unemployment 
• resistance was therefore minimal 
  • Nazism answered the aspirations and needs of majority of Germans 
  • pride in leader + regime that elevated their national standing 
  • therefore Nazism did not collapse due to internal resistance 
    • resistance did not became significant until AFTER the war started to badly for Germany
