Bus Observations

Red line

At the start of the red line, it was mainly nice two story houses with lots of greenery in the surrounding areas. It was slightly suburban and each house was built with nice brick and large windows in varying styles such as victorian and tudor.

The strip malls varied too as one had a German style to it while the next one, just a block down, was red brick and tan signs. A Lot of the parking lots outside of these places and areas surrounding a Panera had nice suvs and bigger cars such as crvs.

Another thing I took instant notice of was the gas. At the start, the gas at a Mobil was $5.29/g and then a few minutes later, gas was $4.67/g at Exxon. About ten to twenty minutes later the gas was $4.75 at Sundco. This was an interesting development because one may think that gas would be more expensive the closer one was to the city, but it was almost the opposite. That might have to do with the change in area and how the switch from suburban homes to townhomes almost discouraged car ownership with the narrower roads. In addition to that, the further down the red line we went, the more people there were who got on the bus.

(Going back to just after the Suburban houses ended, there was an increased prevalence of old red brick townhouses. Interestingly enough, more trash, like paper, empty bottles, and random empty plastic bags, started to line the sidewalks. This uptick in trash started about a block before the Huber Memorial Church.

One red building stood out in particular as it had this large and ornate mural on two sides of it. The mural was a street block and each building was a different and vibrant color. One house was purple and had a man riding a horse in front of it. Another was pink with an old Victorian building. My favorite one was yellow and green depicting a school bus heading into the city.

Not far from the mural was York club tarven. BAsed on the black tarp that was covering up the windows, the tavern was either going out of business or just opening up.

In stark comparison to the suburbia and the vast amount of trees and green lawns, from earlier, there were suddenly rows of old townhouses that were starting to wear down under invasive vines. There was also an obvious decrease in greenery. There was even a beat up white pickup truck that was heavily rusted off to the side.

Mixed in with the homes were random churches that seemed to pop up on every block. Most were weathered down with old red brick and overtaken by vines. These churches were a stark comparison to the ones toward the beginning of the line.

There was an uptick of construction as well on sidewalks and parts of the road.

The further we went down the line, the more the bus filled up. Even though this did not occur outside of the bus, inside, there was a man who helped an elederly lady who was short of some change for the bus. This moment really resonated with me because it just goes to show how the Baltimore community looks out for each other.

Lots of graffiti on two abandoned red brick buildings

Next to a fuel gas station there is a mural of a mother reading her two children a book and of other kids playing around a playground. Not even a few blocks down from that, there was another beautiful mural of multiple women; painted with beautiful smiles and vibrant colors.

On a window there is a chalk line work that says black trans lives matter with outlines of people cheering.

Blue paint is peeling off of a few buildings exposing the red brick underneath.

A cute little playground but no children in sight and only older men were there smoking on the benches.

A nice gothic church. St Ann’s Roman Catholic Church. The Catholic Churches tend to seem better funded and looked after compared to others.

The road starts to narrow.

A large graveyard with brick walls along the perimeter.

Then there is a pink mural with flowers that is currently being painted by some teens.

Bottles and abandoned trash were lining the chain linked fences.

Wider sidewalks and more modern and nicer buildings

Taller buildings like mini skyscrapers with lots of glass became prevalent and the roads also got wider with more lanes

Well looked after areas as there was even a man who looks to be working for the medical center was on the side off the road cleaning up trash with a broom and dust plan

51

On the way back, there were lots of nice buildings.

Also a lot of greenery despite the clustered, but nice buildings around. The buildings were all well kept and had Victorian themes with other unique characteristics that made each stand out for a different reason.

Some construction is in the works to build another skyscraper.

Marathon gas is 4.65.

Streets getting narrower and skyscrapers are long gone

Lots of hair salons and townhouses start to show up.

More trees and its suddenly suburbia again with nicely kept grass.

Lots of people were out walking in comparison to the red line down.

I would see everyone with their friend group and I had to make it okay that I was alone.” - (Samuel)

“Yeah. I felt like I've become a lot more independent because I was like on campus by myself… I feel like once I got here, I was able to like believe, settle into my own individuality.” - (Patience)

“i've learned so much you know like i've learned my self-worth i didn't believe that i could be a smart student like i didn't believe i could get like all a's i didn't think it was possible i thought it was too difficult but then i realized like you know i really can” - (Dami)

Friendship expectation - finding the right friends was difficult and not as easy as some thought

“I thought it was gonna be like that click, i was gonna find those people immediately” - (Raven)

“I had a harder time making friends. first semester… I was so lonely in the first semester.” - (Rosa)

“I kind of... I kind of, it was easier I guess, but here it was a lot tougher because I feel like people already formed their little clicks from like just from the group from the get go and I was like ah this is a little different.” - (Leo)

Change - A job or change in mindset prompted change

“I guess one of the biggest things that prompted the change, was i got a job…t made me push myself out of my comfort zone” - (Raven)

“ I've changed my goals... a lot. I came in... um... wanting to be a very different person than I was. I just never really like knew about that” - (Samuel)

“I took a class about the supreme court last semester and i think it's definitely changed my perspective about the court works and how the constitution is really vague.” - (Melanie)

“it’s all hundreds and thousands of thousands of years ago but um toward the end of it one of the last things that we did is we talked about how all of this is affecting us today and about how that the butterfly effect from ancient Greece to modern-day like nazism and racism and classism in general” - (Mac)

“so I knew but i never really knew like how like racist and kind of like divided the school system really is in terms of like yeah brown versus board of education was passed but we still had segregated neighborhoods…It changed my perspective on the school system and like the flaws and how it made me think about how can i fix this like or not just me” - (Raven)

“It talked about immigration itself and the problems, not only within migrants trying to migrate to America, but, um, the structural violence and then politics within the border, um, border patrol. And so after reading that, it, it really enhanced my perception, not only immigration. Uh, globally too, because it's happening other places” - Tai

The importance of a group or Club - Finding a club became an outlet to find friends and feeling connected with others

“I started making friends was less because of classes but more because i joined… i’m a nerd… i joined the dungeons and dragons club” - (Rosa)

“the first time I ever stepped out of the box and joined a club, especially a sports club, since I'm more of a performing arts…it's just so much fun. And I signed up on the same day ever since everything else was history. And I still talk to everybody that day.” - (tai)

“I told myself i was gonna make the most of my situation so when i got here i put myself out there in every way i applied for thankfuls accepted into the freshman council then i ran for vice president and that worked out for me and also later did badminton club” - (Dami)
