An alkaline diet and one that is rich in antioxidants help reduce outbreaks.

Foods that are high in arginine should be avoided because it promotes growth and replication of the virus in the body. To avoid outbreaks limit consumption of: seeds, nuts, orange juice, chocolate, wheat products, oats, lentils, gelatin, caffeine, protein supplements, watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumbers, junk foods, and artificial sweeteners.
