WWII Anti-Japanese Propaganda

A flood of newspapers, books, radios, and films which would interpret the objective information and be around everywhere. Meaning if one tried to hide themselves from the message, it would be hard to block out the message that the government is trying to portray. The propaganda used was a silent weapon that would target the one's emotions causing one to think differently when exposed enough. The US government would put out as much propaganda everywhere throughout the US . They would use their anti - Japanese rhetoric by explaining how the Japanese had kept their savage traditions or calling them yellow monkeys. The US created the view in their people that the Japanese were subhuman and evolutionary inferior.

Divine Emperor Hirohito

Hirohito was the emperor of Japan from 1926 until 1989, when he died. Once Hirohito became emperor, many major political changes occurred in Japan, including the role of the prime minister, for after 1932, once three prime ministers had been either essentially fired or assassinated, the role was filled with military men, which in turn destroyed the political parties in Japan at the hands of Hirohito. Hirohito was very involved in the military and turned Japan from a rising democratic-like country to a major military-powered nation. This lead to Japan's involvement in WWII and their eventual conflict with the US, most notably the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Japan continued to fight on the Nazi side until the US dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Hirohito then announced over the radio that Japan was surrendering. After the war, Hirohito lost all of his political power and became just a symbol for Japan and nothing more. Overall, Hirohito pushed his war agendas early on in his reign, which in turn changed the public opinion of the Japanese and Hirohito convinced the country to fight, for they saw him as a savior-like figure, but his efforts eventually failed, which would lead to his eventual demise.

Nearly 127,000 citizens in the U.S were of japanese descent. They were not allowed to be naturalized, own land, or vote in several states. Most japanese were looked at with a lot of prejudice after the Pearl Harbor bombing. Several American-born japanese renounced on their citizenship after social issues were very prominent when they were deprived of their traditional respect. People of Japanese ancestry were constantly doubted of their loyalty although they were later on allowed to return to the West Coast early in 1945. Several Japanese descent citizens joined the military as a way to prove their loyalty as well as to show their love for the country.

Executive Order 9066

This was an order that was signed by President Roosevelt, saying that is was to protect the U.S. from Japanese spies or attacks. However, the real reason would be more complicated, partially due to lobbyists who had economic interests in the Japanese being interned. After it was passed, about 70,000 Japanese would lose their homes, livelihood, and rights despite no charges being brought against them. The Supreme court would uphold the legality of the order and the U.S. government would also draft 30,000 Japanese soldiers.

These camps would be the result of Executive Order 9066. Between 110,00 and 120,00 of Japanese were living in these internment camps along the Pacific coast. The Americans did this due to the view points that people were fearing sabotage. In the Japanese internment camps about 1,182 Japanese died here.

The Bystander Effect

Due to people not wanting to cause a disturbance with the government or other people they would do nothing about the Japanese internment. There would be some protests form certain groups such as several Churches, however, it would not be enough and occur too late to cause any sort of real change. Overall, this would be the result of people being unwilling to be the person to step forward, partially out of fear of being labeled a traitor, but also because no one else was stepping forward to rally behind and no one wanted to start a protest or movement. Also, to help convince themselves that they were not doing anything wrong they would believe the propaganda and would think about how the Japanese were benefiting from it . Ultimately this would help the government easily force tens of thousands of innocent people out of their homes, strip them of their rights, and imprison them. Lastly, and to a lesser degree, many people would benefit from the Japanese being gone due to getting cheap land and goods, as well as the competition being lessened.
