I wonder if Melinda will ever get the courage to tell her principal or her parents about why she is falling behind in school. Even though her failing grades were mostly caused by when she was assaulted because of the mental toll it had on her, her parents think that she is just doing to be funny or to get attention. If she spoke up, she could possibly get help with her situation.

In Speak, Melinda was told by a former acquaintance that she was very negative and depressed. This may happen with a lot of people in the world, because they may have experienced something emotional. Other people may not be aware of these events, so they may judge them on being "emotional".

Based on page thirty-four, I am guessing that if a person who Melinda hangs out with points out her negative qualities to use them against her, Melinda may begin to question those personality traits. Melinda had thought that Heather was her friend, but Heather was using those traits as a reason to not be apart of her life anymore. Heather had said that Melinda was very depressed and negative now, so she did not want to do anything fun. These emotions were caused by Melinda's abuse that Heather did not know about. Because Heather did not know about this certain event, she thought that Melinda was just a very negative person in general.

Speak is about a girl who finally gets the courage to stand up for herself. Before Melinda started high school, she was assaulted at a big party. Because she called the cops on the party, the whole school began to dislike her, making it hard to tell the truth about why she did what she did. At the end, she told other people what had happened, because it was affecting her mentality.

The main character changes throughout the book. She changes throughout the book, because she learns to speak up for herself and defend her human rights. Until the end of the book, she had kept quiet about her assault because she was scared to tell anybody about it. But at the end of the book, she stood up for herself so that she would not get hurt again. At the beginning of the book, she was scared and quiet, but at the end she was proud.

The theme of the book is that it is important to speak up. Throughout the pages above, Melinda was put in tough situations where standing up for herself would have been beneficial. The person who assaulted her continued to bully her, and if she had said something to somebody about her assault, this may have not happened.

Throughout the book, there were many flashbacks which helped develop the plot. For example, on page 136, it explained what led to Melinda calling the cops and how she left the scene. It helps the reader understand why she was an outcast at her high school, and it explains why she was depressed. This helps explain Melinda's actions throughout the story.

Laurie Halse Anderson had an interesting writing style for Speak. Throughout the book, the main character had talked about how the school hated her because of an incident that happened during the summer. She did not explain right away what the incident was, so this kept the reader hooked. This lured the reader in because the reader would have wanted to know what had happened.

In my opinion, this book had a very good message/theme. While it had an appealing plot, it still made the topic about consent quite clear. The theme was clearly developed throughout the story, especially in pages 194 and 195. In those pages, Melinda finally defended herself. This book could teach many young adults how important consent is through an entertaining way.
