Q：What are the aspects for setting? Find examples from The Breadwinner.
A：Mode, Atmosphere, Weather condition, Social condition, Time and Place.

For example, in The Breadwinner, the time in the story take place in 1996 to 1997, and it is a story which take place in Kabul, Afghanistan. Also the social condition in The Breadwinner was creepy and dark, as the Taliban ruled the whole city. Women and girls were not allowed to go out if they don’t have the permission from men or boy. The mood or atmosphere in the story was poor and harsh, and the main character---Parvana was very depressed 💧 when her dad was send to jail and her family had arrived to Mazar-e-sharif----The Talibans had just captured the city. How the setting expressed this kind of mood is by describing the daily life of the African families, and how cruel the Taliban was.

Q: Why is setting so important? What will happen if there was no setting for The breadwinner?
A: If there was no setting in a story we wouldn’t know what the author is trying to express and if there was no setting then it would be almost impossible to discribe what social conditions Parvana lives in.

For example, in the Breadwinner, if the story doesn’t have a setting, then we wouldn’t feel the harsh, poor and sad mood in the story. That’s why we have settings.

Q: What is a setting? What is the function of setting?
A: A setting is the time and location in which a story take place. And the set of mood a story is expressing. The setting is for telling the audience about the condition a character lived in, which expresses the mood or atmosphere of the story.

This is an example of a setting. A sunset, it expresses a mood of a quiet and peaceful afternoon.

Q: How to express the mood by setting?
A: To Express the mood in a setting, you need to imagine what will you feel if you are in that setting. For example, a dark creepy street beside a cemetery at night would express an atmosphere of scary and frightening, but a playground with children playing around will reversely expressing a happy mood.

Q: How does a setting control the mood of a character?
A: To use a setting to control the mood of the characters, you need to imagine, what will you be thinking and what is your mood when you are in this setting. To give an example, in The Breadwinner, when Parvana and her mom went to the jail to find her father, Parvana’s mood was a bit afraid and mostly looking forward to see her father, and at the same time, mother had the mood of sad, because she thought that she might not see her husband. Try to imagine what is your mood if you are Parvana

Q: How does Parvana's mood change through the whole story of the breadwinner?
A: See the chart below
This is a line graph of Parvana's mood through the whole story. On the Y axis, there's number 0-6. 0 is happy and 6 is frustration. As you can see, at the end of the story, Parvana was both happy and frustrated. Since her father had came back from jail(happy), and her while family( except from her dad) went to Mazar-e-Sharif for Nooria's wedding.(Sad)
