When giving a student an AT device, it is important to make sure parents, teachers, the student and any aides working alongside them are given the proper training to ensure the AT device is being used for the benefit and to the best of the student's ability. As the teacher, what are some ways you can make sure everyone receives the proper training? by Erika Padilla

I agree with your statement. Too often in my field experiences I saw untrained professionals failing to properly implement AT device and services. When teachers, aides, and parents are untrained we only fail the student and hinder their progress.

Proper training and education is always very important in any situation. It is however even more critical for person with special needs as they sometimes do not have the ability to determine how different technology work on their own.

I think this is something that many collaboration teams forget to take into account. Every individual will be directly involved with the student needs to know how their AT decide is to be properly used. I think the key thing to remember is consistency. Just like students need to practice mathematical operations and fluent reading--they also need to practice and be trained on how to use these AT devices and we as adults need to know how to accurately facilitate this.

Knowing how to use assistive technology is important for both teachers and parents. It is important for parents to understand the technology that their child will be using in school. Many parents also help their children at home with AT. It is important for parents and teachers to know how to use the technology and what to do when the equipment breaks down. Having proper training on AT will help teachers and parents teach the student how to use AT so that they can benefit from the device.

I 100% agree with this statement. To often teachers who work with the student with the assistive technology does not know how the assistive technology works. Which is a hindrance to the students learning when a problem or question about the assistive technology arises and the teacher has no clue. They spend too much time working on how to figure out how the assistive technology works, and not enough time focused on the lesson. Bring the student to be further behind their peers then they were already.

This statement is one of the most critical components to understanding the use of AT in any setting. To execute the use of the technology effectively you must have proper training and understanding on how to ensure that the device is aiding the individual to be as independent as possible.
