“Milton Hershey applied for his first job at the age of 14, he was an amateur at a small, German newspaper company in Lancaster. Milton hated the work ethic that was applied towards amateurs, so he got himself fired” (Nelson 1). The following is a quotation describing the event when Milton wanted to become a chocolatier and the most successful businessman that he had ever wanted to become: "I believed that, if I put a chocolate on the market that was better than anyone else was making, or was likely to make, and keep it absolutely uniform in quality, the time would come when the public would appreciate it and buy it” (Hershey 1).

Lancaster Caramel Company, 1894-1900

“Milton Hershey began experimenting with boiled milk, sugar and cacao beans in an effort to create affordable milk chocolate that could be produced across the globe” (Manley). The following is a quotation describing the scenario in which Milton wants to improve the quality of his product: “One is only happy in proportion as he makes others feel happy” (Hershey 1). “Milton Hershey had purchased every piece of machinery for $20,000 from Lehmann that could transform cocoa beans into liquid chocolate. Eventually, Hershey began making chocolate with caramel, whilst experimenting with new recipes” (Manley 1).

Milton Hershey’s Experimental Plant, 1901-1904

“As the Hershey company grew and the company’s wealth expanded, so did Milton’s vision for creating a community in his hometown region” (Biography.com Editors). The following is a quotation describing the event where Milton had built a community for the betterment of his workers and for the people who lived in Pennsylvania: “The value of our good is not measured by what it does, but by the amount of good it does to the one concerned” (Hershey 1). “Milton had built schools, parks, churches, houses and recreational facilities for his employees and for the public. He had even installed a trolley system for his workers to arrive safely and on time each day” (Biography.com Editors).

Students of Hershey Industrial School, 1915-1920
