Who Was Nikola Tesla?

Nikola Tesla was an inventor from a Serbian-American Household. His inventions have helped shaped society today as we know it, he was an incredible thinker and engineer, he was also a futurist and was ahead for his time. In his early life, Nikola Tesla's father would not allow him to read books as he believed that it was a waste of time. Nikola Tesla would sneak into his father's office during the night and he would read any book he could get his hands on and understand. By him reading those books, it opened his imagination up and helped shape his impact on the world. He also believed that you should nurture your creativity and invention making skills at a young age. Nikola Tesla stated, "Our first endeavors are purely instinctive, promptings of an imagination vivid and undisciplined.

As we grow older reason asserts itself and we become more and more systematic and designing." (PG. 1) Nikola Tesla's father helped nurture his creativity in unorthodox ways. Nikola Tesla recounts times where his father would say something to someone that would at first make no sense but when taken into a different account would lead to a whole new meaning. Like when Nikola Tesla's brother was swinging an axe at wood, his father was too close for comfort and yelled, ""For God's sake, Mane, do not strike at what you are looking but at what you intend to hit." (PG. 3). Nikola Tesla's father would also often have full arguments with himself, sometimes changing his voice while arguing. This shaped Nikola Tesla to look at everything with multiple perspectives which would help with solving issues in his inventions or ideas.

How has Nikola Tesla connects with my shaper of the world...

My mother may not appear to have anything in common with Nikola Tesla on the outside but both of them have dealt with similar hardships and have both equally persevered through both of them. Nikola Tesla had many set backs with his financial situation, which affected his work and could effect the way people around him perceived him as an inventor. My mother has dealt with financial hardships in her life and she too had to work extremely hard in order to move forward. My mother told me a story about how she had to leave her home country, England, and move out to the states to help with her families financial situation. My mother started off as a nanny for wealthy people and she traveled around the country working hard. She told me how she would often have to put most of her money away in case she would lose her job, she disciplined herself with her spending habits and helped my grandparents with their situation. Her telling me this story helped me realize all that my mother has done for my family. Nikola Tesla had to sacrifice so much in order to make his inventions work, he was an innovator and come up with solutions that worked. I can say the same for my mother, she worked hard and knew how to handle her money, when she met my father, the two of them together worked to support themselves and soon my two brothers and I. But my mother has done a lot more for just me and my family, she has worked with the community in Greenwich and has built friendships with parents and adults around the school system. She has advocated for better conditions in school, as long with advocating for a much more disciplined way of the school contacting parents in case of an emergency. So although she may have not invented something that helps the whole world, she has come up with solutions to problems in her community that make people's lives easier, which is exactly what Nikola Tesla's inventions were for. I believe that although anyone can come up with solutions to issues, the best solutions come from two factors. The first factor being that the person coming up with the solution must be apart of the issue. What I mean by that is anyone can come up with a solution, but someone involved with the issue knows exactly what they need to fix and they have an understanding of what would work best. Nikola Tesla took this into account when his inventions wouldn't work, he would trace his steps back to find the root of the issue and then he would come up with multiple solutions to see which one would work best, then he would carry on what he is working with, taking the issue into mind to avoid that problem in the future. An example for my mother would be that when I was in the third grade, during an early dismissal, she was supposed to be called to come pick me up, but since she worked the night shift at the Greenwich hospital, she was asleep. Unable to get my mother on the phone, the school decided to let me leave anyways and find my own way home (I went to the library instead). Shortly after my mother had woken up, she saw the missed call on her phone and rushed to come pick me up. After seeing I was at the library she was relieved but angered at the school. When she walked in to the Principal's office she yelled at them, telling them that they couldn't just let me leave and that they needed to call my father or at least my brother, who at the time was a senior at the Highschool. What came out of that was a system where if they could not reach my mother, then they would call my father, and if they could not get ahold of him, then they would call my brother. She was affected by the issue, and she was able to come up with a simple yet smart solution while she was still angered at what happened. The Second factor is that people who have experienced hardships or events in their lives, that have shaped who they are today, will shape the world around them in the same way. An example would be Nikola Tesla's mother's lineage were inventors, having invented items for households and agriculture. When Nikola Tesla had learned of this, he became inspired, and eventually became an inventor. With my mother, through her hardships and learning how to save money, she was able to teach my brothers and I how to keep our money safe and how to stop us from spending it all in one place or on things that we do not need. My mother and Nikola Tesla have a lot more in common then I first realized and understanding the connection has helped me appreciate all that my mother has done for my family and I. It has also helped me see what kind of a man Nikola Tesla was and how he shaped the world in more ways than just his inventions.

What can I add to the world around me?

When I think of what I want to do in life, or ultimately be remembered for, is helping make the world a better place. Through the past 3 years or so, that meaning has changed a lot. For the longest time I wanted to be a director for movies and I wanted to make people awe over my works and I wanted to move them in a way where they become better people for themselves. But more recently I have found that the world is crumbling from war and pollution; I want to shape the world in a way where I don't just make people happier with themselves, but I want them to treat everyone how they would want to be treated. I want to incorporate those ideas into movies, hoping to reach the world and make people realize that although their time on the planet is short lived, their words and actions will echo through the universe until it collapses. Nikola Tesla and my mother have helped shape my world on a personal level in a lot of ways. To start, with Nikola Tesla's inventions, it has helped create a whole new line of inventors with what he has done with electricity, which has now allowed me to talk to my friends from long distances on a device that is held in my hand, or it helps me learn what is going on in the world with news. Or my favorite, it allows me to watch movies wherever I want. With my phone I am able to do so much so quickly where as if I was living in the early 1900's. My mother of course has shaped my world deeply on a personal level. I am rooted with the same morals that my mother has since she has taught me them. The way that I talk to people or the way that I argue / love is all rooted from her, and her ideas which may not have lead to inventions, have helped make my world more simple and easier to wade through, which is what inventions are supposed to do. Nikola Tesla's story is a representative of me as a human and the way I live my life in a lot of ways. He constantly kept moving forward even if it was harder for him then moving backwards. He understood that life is not easy and nothing is handed to you. I understand that as a human, the way I live my life will depend on my success, knowing this helps me keep moving forward and to keep working hard.

In what ways will you carry on the legacy of your person of magnitude?

I want to carry on the legacy of Nikola Tesla by making the world a better and a more unified place. I want to help people understand how to navigate through life and how to overcome hardships. But I also want to remind people of what goes on in the world and what they can do to help it. Although I may not be inventing anything brand new, or reinventing the wheel, I would still be helping people out and making their lives much more simpler, which is like what I said, what inventions are all about.
