I think this unit has helped me to look at the bigger picture and be more empathetic of what may be going on for students.

Attitude problems may actually be a student finding it hard to learn/process the information given rather than them not being interested in learning it.

For the experience I was thinking about earlier. The student may have had a fixed mindset at the time due to the other challenges and anxieties they were facing in their life. They had turned up and were actively wanting to learn but were struggling.
Their prior knowledge/experience of being in a lab would also have been disrupted due to Covid which wouldn't have helped.

- Emily

Looking back at an experience of poor student engagement, I think cognitive load and stress in particular would have played a part.

The session was quite long and equation heavy, not leaving a lot of time for Germane load.

It was also quite close to exam time, so I think stress may have played a part. The timing of the session could be re-evaluated, but also checking in with the students at the start of the session to see how they're feeling and whether there are particular areas they want to focus on.

(Camilla)

At the beginning of the unit I had reflected on a situation when I had provided an out of hours lecture to students, and struggled to engage them in the material or in questions. On reflection at the end of this unit, there were likely a number of extrinsic stressors at play, these students were just starting their first night shift and hadn't worked on the medicine service before. The lecture I was giving was information heavy, and so there likely was also an excessive intrinsic load for what was likely a novel topic for them.
The research about fixed and growth mindsets also resonated with me. I believe a lot of the small animal-minded students that come on their equine rotations have more of a fixed mindset, and so are more likely to be intimidated by the work, the animals and the staff than the growth-minded students. It is nice seeing many of them develop over the week and become less anxious. (Sophie)

Looking back at an experience of poor student engagement, I think that stress had an impact for the student along with frustration at practicing for a long period of time with no significant skill improvement visualized. I think perhaps the student may have had a fixed mind set, and while wanting to improve their skills, anxieties were possibly leading them to struggle.

(Michelle)

This unit has helped me appreciate the reasons why students are unmotivated or appear to be unreceptive to learning.
Looking back at the experience of reduced engagement I reflected on, I believe the main issue was likely to be a heavy extrinsic load due to stress and anxiety, which left not a lot of room for intrinsic learning, and definitely none for Germane load! Despite having experienced these issues myself, I didn't fully appreciate the reasons why I was unreceptive to learning until having it properly explained in this unit.

-Anna

I initially pinned down the cause of my experience to communication issues on my side (too much jargon). I can now recognise that ineffective learning can also stem from prior knowledge assumptions, content, stress, working memory differences, fixed mindsets, not having space/time to reflect and learn, and specific learning differences. I found Cognitive Load Theory, particularly useful.

-Adriana
