It limits to the west with the Natural Park of the Sierra Norte de Sevilla, with the natural border between both protected areas being the Retortillo River. To the north it adjoins the Bembézar basin; to the east, with the river Guadiato and, finally, to the south, with the Guadalquivir valley.

Hornachuelos is a Mediterranean mid-mountain ecosystem and its forest cover can be considered, perhaps, as the best preserved in the province of Córdoba. The most abundant plant element is the holm oak, accompanied by cork oaks and gall oaks in the most humid places, or by the wild olive tree in the Vega del Guadalquivir. You can also contemplate pasture areas with pastures, which grow under the holm and cork oaks.

This Natural Park, with almost 60,000 ha and five population centers, is characterized by its homogeneity and its low fragmentation, the result of the application of traditional methods in the use of its natural resources.

The municipalities in the protected area, all of them within the province of Córdoba, are: Almodóvar del Río, Córdoba, Hornachuelos, Posadas and Villaviciosa de Córdoba

The sierra presents a smooth relief and its peaks reach a maximum height of 725 meters above sea level. They are lands not suitable for cultivation and colonized by Mediterranean forest, mainly holm oaks and cork oaks.
