I appreciate how Lisa created an environment where students could learn from one another, hold each other accountable, and carry the discussion on their own without needing too much guidance from the instructor. I would like to do something similar when I start teaching in the spring.

English 9 w/ Ms. Gallien

Socratic seminar re: "Bless Me Ultima"

Students were required to speak twice and it was obvious they were well aware of what was going on. Props to Lisa for the prep work. Ms. Gallien rarely intervened except to caution that there is "no need to push others to speak; it is best to encourage." Comments ranged from religion to school to culture & showed that they were really thinking about the book's themes and content. Students appeared to be comfortable with the situation and have probably done this before. The accountability factor is high for Socratic seminars, but I wonder how they are given feedback? It was a bit difficult to hear in that room, but I appreciate that the kids "leaned in" to hear.

Student Presentations in Scripture Class

Three student groups presented on topics they researched pertaining to the time Jesus was alive. During the presentations, most students were attentive, with their eyes on speaker, some taking notes. Ms. McCormick asked students to ask the speakers questions after each presentation. One student participated four times, and another few asked questions. For the most part, students were well versed on their topic and able to answer both student and teacher follow up questions. The presenters communicated varying degrees with interest in their subjects. I am curious about how the topics were chosen or assigned. It was fun to see so many students that I taught last year in another context!
