I'm a music teacher and for many subjects in my class it is a process for the students. For something like reading rhythms in fifth grade, they need to remember not only the rhythms they learned this year, but rhythms that they learned all the way back to first grade.

I have always tried to focus on the "process" instead of the final product. This can be challenging when trying to assign grades to student projects, as well as when thinking about art displays…. That said, I am excited at the possibility to try some new things in the coming years that will excite more students about art.

In my first grade social studies class I present the students with a list of social/behavior problems that could occur in a classroom setting. The class is then divided into small groups (4 or less). The groups may choose a problem from the list, or come up with their own scenario. They brainstorm ideas to solve the problem. Each group presents to the class by acting out the problem and solution. The presentation is discussed by the class.

I think that one of the biggest takeaways will be having my students more actively self-assess themselves and their peers. Writing lends itself to peer assessment, mostly in the form of revising and editing. However, I also see value in having a completely new set of peer eyes view a piece in its published form, and assessing the final product. Also, I love the idea of having students use color-coding to draw their attention to key requirements of a project, and then having them identify where they are located in their work. It would give them a great opportunity to make sure they didn't miss anything, and to see if they need to improve anything in order to create the best possible product.

During class discussions in ACES, there really aren't many final products, but open discussion about current situations. Trying to be realistic and relevant is always how I want my instruction and student response to be.
I especially like the concept of "get out of the way" and let the process of learning happen. I'm impressed by the idea that content itself may not be what's the most important, but the process of learning how to learn! This is what is going to serve our students in the 21st Century. The work place is one of collaboration that is making this approach to learning indispensable. I am challenged to find ways to have students learn this way in ACES. This really is very different than what I do most of the time with such a short time with the students. I take that challenge to heart! Hmmm...I would love to create a project based learning design around the subject of friendship in 2nd grade. A question for students to create the project around could be why some kids have lots of friends and some kids don't.

In physical education it is about the process...in climbing, students learn the basic skills, practice them and learn through failing. They work with the group to problem solve if equipment is not set up correctly since I do not give them the answer. This is the process before they can climb to a 45 ft rafter! I, the teacher, always checks equipment but they must work with their team and know how to set up before I do any safety checks.

I love the idea and theory of the PBL approach. I have given my students PBL opportunities when they work in small groups to demonstrate their understanding of a novel (literary elements, points of interests, content understanding). They had choice of novel, instructional tools, and project delivery. I used google docs as a means to document their collaboration and progress. I still had students that didn't contribute ideas or pull their own weight even though I included criteria on the rubric identifying both group and individual scores. I do believe the PBL approach strongly impacts student learning, but I also appreciate the value of other approaches to instruction and assessment.

Educators and students alike operate in a standards-based learning system. Since personalized PBL's provide an open door for students to meet a variety of different standards, how does a teacher then manage students meeting all standards (when returning to a more traditional whole group instructional practice, because let's face it, not all content/concepts fit the PBL model)? So when returning to more traditional based instruction and assessments, it feels like managing and making sure all students have met each standard, would require the teacher to then differentiate all lessons afterwards to ensure that each student was getting what they needed and not sitting through the lessons in which they have already met those standards. I would think differentiating by creating centers and providing resources for independent acquisition of content/concepts would be needed. This seems like best practice, but also a tremendous amount of work/preparation which I'm not sure could be all done beforehand as one would not know the standards each student will have met until the actual PBL materializes. Bah! This seemingly all-or-nothing approach is rather intimidating, but I'm sure there is more literature on this concern that I haven't read yet including other teacher's tips and suggestions for implementation.

Having a group to work with often helps in this area. The challenge at this point becomes assessment. Children should never receive a "group grade." It is essential that each child is assessed on his/her own merit.

Our students have to learn about the needs of a goldfish. I think instead of just having them brainstorm and guide them to the correct answers, I will simply give them the question and tell them that they need to solve this question using any resources that they have become familiar with in the classroom (books, iPads, library, background knowledge, and associated curriculum books) to allow the students to forge their own learning and then present their findings in any way they see fit.

I have been wanting to implement PBL for 2 years now, but with being a kindergarten teacher I have been so nervous to actually put the time in to implement this. My fears come from ensuring that I am actually doing PBL and not just another project. It is also comes from the level independence that they may or may not have to complete projects on thier own. With moving to first grade next year I look forward to using this information to help propel me to try at least PBL during the school year.

I love this idea about giving students the ability to make their own choices on their learning. The students who are at this level of learning I feel will have success. I have students though who would just sit and choose to do nothing if I don't give them more direction.

I like how project based learning is over various multiple subjects where as problem based is a singular subject at a time.

I think by implementing PBL in my classroom students will be more engaged in their learning and will take on a greater interest and responsibility with their learning.

My greatest take-away from this clip is how great of an impact PBL can take on students learning across the curriculum! I love how it benefits all learners where they are at!

I've done project- based learning before and I love the idea of students taking control of the lesson. You get to really see what they are interested in. I've done it with Social Studies and Science before.

I've never used problem-based learning before, but I feel like it would be difficult to use in the kindergarten setting.
I still love using the project based learning style though! I think its a great way to get students involved in the learning process.
