They want to study Lake Vostok because it could help them learn about life on other planet. The text states that, "Studying the lake could help scientists learn about possible life elsewhere in the Solar System." This shows that because it says that they also want to know because no one knows what life is on other plantets. To sum things up scientists want to study lake Vostok.

A problem that they faced is that they had to spend a couple years drilling through the ice. The text states, "The scientists had been drilling for nearly two decades. " This means that they faced some problems because it took them 2 decades just to drill through the ice. All in all a problem that they faced is that they had to drill.

Scientists want to study Lake Vostok because there is 2 miles of ice underneath it and they are looking for microbes. A microbe is a sign of life. If microbes live under the ice, then they might be able to live in space. Some of the problems the scientists have faced have been that it took 20 years to drill down to the lake because of the two miles of ice on top of the lake. Also, there is high pressure in the lake.

Scientists want to study Lake Vostok because they are interested in seeing if they can find life in the lake because it is dark and cold just like space. The author says that "If microbes can live in the lake, they might live in space, too." This shows that if there can be microbes in a lake there can be microbes in space. Lake Vostok is just like space, dark and cold. All in all, if scientist find microbes then they can may find them in space too.

There were a few problems that the scientist had. The air got thin and it was hard to breathe, it got really cold, and the scientists have to get the OK from the government to test the water. The article says that "Temperatures there have been the coldest ever recorded on Earth. And it's not just the cold. The station is also more than 11,000 feet (3,352.8 meters) above sea level. That makes the air thin...The leaders who take care of the environment in Antarctica still have to say if it's OK" to test the water. This shows that it was tough for the scientists to drill through all that ice in cold and thin air. To sum things up, the scientist faced a lot of problems but they still got it done and completed drilling down to the water

Some of the problems they faced were drilling through the ice with no help. It was just the scientists drilling through the ice. They also had to use chemicals to melt the ice. The text states "studying Lake Vostok can help scientists learn about Antarctica". This shows that when the study about the lake they will learn more about Antarctica. To sum things up, Lake Vostok will help the scientists with different things. The scientists had problems with Vostok station. The text states "it also makes it a lonely place". This shows that sense the station is so high in the air it makes people feel lonely sometimes. To sum things up, a problem they have is that the station can feel lonely.
