Action Plan for Goal #1

My goal of creating a strong leader-member relationship refers to the group atmosphere and the member’s attitude towards me as their leader. How I will do this is by engaging with my employees so they can trust and respect me. In the workplace, I will ask my employees how there are doing at work and in their personal life. I will also ask them what they’d like to see in the workplace. When asking them how they are doing, I will make sure I listen and act on the appropriate action (Ryan, 2018). I had a previous manager ask me every day how I was doing and truly listened to my responses. It created me trusting him more. Another important way on how I will achieve this to not blame or shame any employees for a mistake. If I kept track of my employees’ mistakes and say nothing about their successes, it can cause the good employees to leave and the fearful ones to stay (Ryan, 2018). With having my employees tell me their mistakes and not lie, I will be able to solve the problem faster and more efficiently. By using these actions, I will create a highly favorable situation of a leader-member relationship.

Since I am a judging personality, my goal is to be more understanding of perceiving personality types. These personalities refer to how quickly an individual makes a decision (Daft, 2016). My action plan will involve me taking a deep breath when I get frustrated and thinking more about the perceiving type of personality. For instance, perceiving people think more when it comes to making a decision and they can start to be more empathic and find a solution that balances what feels right for everyone instead of focusing solely on the facts (DiScala, 2018). I will think that person may come up with a better solution than myself because they thought more on the idea. Another action plan I will do is set earlier deadlines for that individual since it gives me anxiety thinking they will not get the assignment done on time. This way, they will be able to work on the task on how they feel comfortable doing so and I will get a peace of mind knowing it will be done before the deadline.

When I put these action plans into place, I will reach my leadership vision of becoming a leader than my followers can trust. When asking my team “how are they doing” every morning, it will create a bond between the two of us. It also allows them to be vulnerable to me. Furthermore, this benefits me and my employee. Having a strong leader member-relationship is not only a highly favorable situation to the leader (Daft, 2016), but can be an advantage to the employees. This is because they can be confident in their leader and enjoy coming to work hence, creating low turnover.

After completing my action plan for understanding a perceiving personality, I will have a stronger relationship with my perceiving type employees. If I did not have this goal, I would find myself getting frustrating with my staff for taking so long to make a final decision and being close to deadlines. Now, I realize that there are benefits with this personality. The perceiving trait makes it easier to work in groups because they’re open-minded to others’ ideas (DiScala, 2018).
