Product- students demonstrate knowledge with a material product that can be assessed.

Performance- evaluates the demonstration of skills during a process, such as a presentation.

Rubrics- Analytic rubrics communicate performance for different criterion. Holistic rubrics communicate performance for the entire assignment.

Traditional Assessments

Oral Exams- students are called on individually and are required to answer a question given by the teacher.

Classroom Jeopardy- All students participate in a game of Jeopardy. They enjoy the assessment and don't think of it as a test.

Crossword Puzzles- Test facts, definitions, and vocabulary. The students enjoy these and don't think of them as a test.

Traditional Tests

Essay and Short Answer- These are easy to construct, eliminate guessing, and require recall of knowledge. The disadvantages are that they take longer to grade and usually take longer to administer.

Matching- These tests have a problem and response column and focus on key ideas. They reduce guessing as well. The disadvantage is that they require no recall and creating them takes time.

Fill-in-the-Blank- They simply require recall of information. The disadvantage is that they take a while to grade.

True-False- These are good because they cover a lot of material in a short period of time. The disadvantage is that they encourage guessing, focus on facts, and require little recall.

Multiple-Choice- These tests require judgments on the answers and cover a lot of material. The disadvantage is that they require little recall, focus on facts, and require time and skill to recognize wrong answers.

At the end of class, I will ask my students to write 3 things they learned that day. This will allow me to adjust my instruction based on the need of my students. If students needed help, next class would be spent focusing on that.

Laundry Day

I would split the class up into 4 groups, each with different content. They would switch every so often to get to all 4 topics by the end of class. More advanced students can help lower level students master content.

Response Logs

At the end of class, the students would answer a few questions in their journal. I would assess these after school and give them feedback when needed. Issues with content or understanding would be addressed the next day before new content is presented.

Fist-To-Five

This method allows me, the teacher, to ask a question about content and assess each student's understanding with a 0-5 rating based on the amount of fingers they hold up. The more difficult content that needs work would be focused on during the next class before new content is presented.

Constructive Quizzes

Although I would like to eliminate as many unnecessary quizzes as possible, the occasional quiz would help me quickly understand if my students are grasping the material, and it would tell me if I need to adjust my instruction to meet their needs. This could be a simple 5 question quiz in place of an exit ticket.
