<title>All known electromagnetic waves can be seen in the electromagnetic spectrum. The electromagnetic spectrum is the term used for all the possible variations of frequencies in&amp;nbsp;electromagnetic radiation. The electromagnetic spectrum is shown here, from the least to most dangerous.</title>

<title>Electromagnetic waves are created by vibrations, just like any other wave. The vibration creates a wave that has both an electric and magnetic component. When the waves meet an atom, the energy is absorbed. The absorption of energy causes electrons in the atoms to undergo vibration. This can be seen in the animation shown.</title>

<title>There are many types of waves. For instance, sound waves, mechanical waves, and electromagnetic waves. Each type of wave has a different function and purpose that can tremendously affect our world. Electromagnetic waves have vibrations that are both electric and magnetic and they can travel through space without a medium. Mechanical waves are also made from vibrations but they do need&amp;nbsp;a medium in order to travel. Lastly, sound waves are waves of compression and refraction that exerts a sound through an elastic medium like air. Mechanical waves need a medium to travel as mentioned before. They are also an oscillation of matter. Even though the travel distance is very long, when traveling through a medium, is in fact limited. These waves are not the most common, but they play an important role in our world just like electromagnetic waves.</title>

<title>The energy from electromagnetic waves can be used for many things. First of all, radio waves can be used to transmit a radio signal. This means that the music you might listen to on the radio on your way to work everyday is produced by radio waves. Microwaves, as stated in the name, is the wave inside a microwave that heats up our food. These waves are a little dangerous, which is why they say to not look inside a microwave for so long. Next on the spectrum are infrared rays. These rays are used to determine body temperatures by using colors. The next wave is the only one visible to humans and is known as visible light. This wave includes all the colors you see in this world everything that is in color has an electromagnetic wave. Next are ultraviolet rays. These are very harmful to skin and are produced by our Sun. X-rays, as also said in the name, are for x-rays. X-rays can be very harmful which is why your body is covered whenever you are about to take an x-ray. The last known wave are gamma rays. Gamma rays are the most dangerous of all. They are found in nuclear reactions or bombs and sometimes even in space. These are&amp;nbsp;all the waves in the electromagnetic spectrum known to human and just some of the&amp;nbsp;very important&amp;nbsp;functions they play on our Earth.&amp;nbsp;</title>

<title>Radio waves are what help radios work. The wavelength of this wave is very long and just one wave is as large as one football field. Microwaves are not only used for microwave ovens but also for cell phones and radars. Infrared rays can not be seen but we feel it as heat. For example, when you put your hands near a fire, you feel heat, or infrared rays. Visible light is only a very small section of the spectrum. Red has the longest&amp;nbsp;wavelengths while violet has&amp;nbsp;the shortest, meaning that as you go through a rainbow, the energy will increase from red to violet.&amp;nbsp;Excessive ultraviolet rays are harmful to the skin and can cause skin cancer. However, it is important to absorb some ultraviolet rays because Vitamin D is a very important nutrient that our body needs. X-rays are also&amp;nbsp;not only used for x-rays but can be used for bag checks in airports. Lastly, gamma rays, unlike radio waves, are almost as small the nuclei of an atom.</title>
