A script is subdivided into scenes and other structural units. such as Location: internal, external or general location name. Characters, Time and dialogue. scriptwriting is similar to the process engaged in while building, you lay the foundation and make sure it is strong before building up on it. Over the time I spent writing POLUPOIKILOS, I have learnt that scriptwriting is the guide for filming, it contains all most everything if not everything for the filming process to the end result which is the one shown to the audience. A script is like a line in which scenes are hung on, a script holds a world in it.

1. According to Syd (2005), screenplay is a guide, or an outline, for a movie? A blueprint, or a diagram? or maybe it's a series of images, scenes and sequences strung together with dialogue and description, like pearls on a strand? perhaps it's simply the landscape of a dream?

2. Syd (2005) states that a screenplay is a story told with pictures, in dialogue and description and placed within the context of dramatic structure.

3. STRUCTURE: The script must have a structure, and a very strong one that can hold up the entirety of the script. the structure is the intricate relationship between each scene, a good structure is like the sense of the script, the backbone and the life of the script. without a good structure the script will not hold meaning. "Structure is like gravity: it is the glue that holds the story in place; it is the base, the foundation, the spine, the skeleton of the story." Syd (2005)

4. A script must have a beginning, middle and the end. In a way we can say a script is life and just like life it has a beginning, middle and an end. just like life progresses the script also progress and sometimes the script can play with the timeline and start from the end and then goes to the beginning and then the middle and this play on the timeline is based on the writer's vision.

5. The first few scenes must capture the audiences undivided attention. it must get the involved in the film, the first few scenes will determine the success of the film because it is this scene's ability to make the audience sit, anticipate and concentrate and make them sit to the end. When the audience expectations are not met during the first few scenes, they won't be able to concentrate more on the remaining parts of the film even if the film is great. What is a great film without an audience to watch with rapt attention. A film cannot do without its audiences.

6. Drama is conflict. Without conflict, you have no actions; without action, you have no character; without character, you have no story; and without story, you have no screenplay. (Syd, 2005)

7. CHARACTER: I learnt the essential qualities if character, how a character must have strong wills, their point of view, attitude and the need for them to go through transformation. Characters are humans in the script world, the art and craft of scripting contains element of reality, and the most constant element is human emotions and the humans in the script, just like how humans the real world go through transformation, how they have their believes, their attitudes and wills, the characters in the script also have these qualities. The characters must be built up strongly, they must have a dramatic need and this need is what drives them, it will lead them to make decisions and make moves in the script. A character must reflect who they her.

   Adepeju in the Script POLUPOIKILOS is fashion enthusiast, and her dramatic need is to be known in the fashion world, her character reflects who she is has a fashion designer and the action she took to be known in the fashion world reflect her strong will and attitude.

8. Pages: Syd states that the normal Hollywood film is approximately 2 hours long, or 120 minutes. According to him, 2 hours is a standard length. I came to know that one page of screenplay is one minute, and it doesn't matter if it is filled with dialogue, actions or both. The first few pages of script must capture the attention of the reader, it must draw them in to keep reading or watching, it must make them feel that it is worth it and not a waste of time. it is in these first few pages that the writer will set up the story, establish the character, reveal what the story is about, and circumstances surrounding the characters and also create the relationship between the characters.

1. Scripting is the art of formulating stories: Whether the script is for drama or film both are art which involves the audience getting in touch with the writer through the drama or film. The writer's idea, thoughts and feeling are expressed to the audience through the art of scriptwriting. The art of scripting I believe shows the idea of sharing which is in human. Humans will always share, for example: you share you good and news with family and friends, you share your excitement with friends, and you share pain with family. in every way sharing takes place with us humans. The art of storytelling is sharing formulated stories gotten from one's box of ideas and imagination and this sharing is now not for family and friends alone but to a wide range of people you know, and you don't know.

2. End goal: in script writing there must be an end goal that is a chosen character must something he or she is chasing. The character must goal driven and must be ready to do all things to achieve their goals. While on the road of achieving the goal or goals the character will face hurdles and setback, but the character will not lose his or her momentum but will keep on going and not look back till the goal is achieved. The chosen character can't be without a goal, the character must be driven and visionary.

3. Settings: The settings of the world in the script are very important, the places each action unfolds must be constantly seen in the script and it must spread throughout the script. The settings will in one way or the other show the kind of action that will take place in each scene. For example, if a scene is set in a football pitch filled with people cheering and jumping, waving clothes of teams they support then in this scene the audience watching will be able to infer that a competition is about to take place not that a scene will set like that, and two children will be playing with yoyo in the scene. The example shows that each setting must correspond with the action taking place.

Following Syd's idea of page and how a script has to have a beginning, middle and an end and Charlie's idea of tension.

Polupoikilos is my creation, if i might say, i will call it my baby and in this creation a lot as gone into the birth of this baby. Time, emotions, studying and so much more as gone into creation. this Padlet documents the creation and the birthing process of this baby.

The aim of this creation is to be an authentic performance, a script that the audience would love to watch over and over again. the creation also seeks to answer the question Does culture affects a performer's work?

The inspiration for the name polupoikilos was gotten from POIKILOS CHARIS which is the watch word for us at my church (Heralds International Christian Centre https://heraldsnation.org/#resources) and it means Manifold Grace. Poikilos itself means many, variable and words in line with many. I wanted my work to carry all the aspect of my life. I am Human and I am a Christian a spiritual being, I wanted it to carry a touch of my spirit being and then i went on to the Greek bible meaning to look for words in line with Poikilos Charis and then I found Polupoikilos which was used in Ephesians 1, and it means Manifold and can be related to variety of colors.

The script itself was birth from the idea of fashion and color and polupoikilos successful had the meaning I have been searching for, and it successfully combined all aspect of my life. Now i term Polupoikilos for this creation to mean MANY COLORS.

This below is the changed research question.

This research seeks to answer the question; How can Culture Affects the Creative Process {Scriptwriting}?

I am answering his questions based on my journey as a scriptwriter and the influences around this project. Under this question I have some sub questions, and they are:

What is creative process?

How has culture affected my scriptwriting?

The answers are based on me and the research embarked on in the process of articulation. The answers are not sensitive, and they are safe.

Creative process is the procedure one undergoes in the journey of creativity. Creativity is one the important features of humanity, it is the art of problem solving or filling up a gap in the society. It is the process of creativity and filling the gaps in the society that has laid the foundation of what we have now in this century and it what this century gives out that the people in the coming century will build on and this how the human community evolves and grow. "Creativity can be perceived as an inherent capacity and a need of the human species that has survival value for the individual as well as the culture (Albert, 1990)"

Creativity is closely associated with culture, "Culture exerts a profound effect on creative expression. Not only does it influence what is expressed, but it also determines by whom it is expressed, how it is expressed, and what functions this expression serves. (Ludwig, 1992)", the culture of the place one was born or the ones the parent are known for is one of the things a child comes into, and these are what forms one's belief system. Belief system includes one's do's and don'ts, food, clothing etc. sometimes one's point of view is from the Lense of belief system which stems from culture and its entirety.

Moreover, culture refers to “the rules and habits that bind a particular society together…the set of practices that keep a society together and allow its members to find meaning in their lives” (Baldock, 2010). The role culture plays in our lives can't be overlooked and that is why it must be embraced.

“culture consist of patterns, explicit and implicit, of and for behavior acquired and transmitted by symbols, constituting the distinctive achievements of human groups, including their embodiment in artifacts; the essential core of culture consists of traditional (i.e. historically derived and selected) ideas and especially their attached values; culture systems may, on the one hand, be considered as products of actions, on the other, as conditional elements of future actions”. (Kroeber & Kluckhohn 1952 in Spencer, 2012). Even in the process of writing the script, the cultural patterns in me were displayed and one of the ways it can be seen is through the music I used in the process of writing the script. Generally, where I grew up, we listen to other countries artist but not as much as we do to ours and this is a pattern in us that we support our own first and defend them. The music that surrounds me are my country's and it was when I went to work that I heard "die with a smile by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars" while listening to the song it reminded me of my script, and I thought I will try to listen and connect more to music like this. Culture itself manifest in different behavioral patterns.

"Culture consists of the derivatives of experience, more or less organized, learned or created by the individuals of a population, including those images or encodements and their interpretations (meanings) transmitted from past generations, from contemporaries, or formed by individuals themselves."(T.Schwartz 1992; cited by Avruch 1998 in Spencer, 2012). The idea that transformed to the script was influenced by my culture and my love for chasing dreams that people consider out of reach and my first character was black and the script was based on her point of view, not because of anything sensitive but because i know and i have experienced what it is to be a Nigerian in another country chasing her dreams.

So far and based on the experience I had while writing, my answer is YES culture does affect ones work as a scriptwriter.

Ego is a heartbreak sing that talks about how the man has left everything and sacrificed a lot to be with a woman all for nought and the song is like a letter telling the woman that he is going.

Love letter by Hammerboi is a promise he is making to woman that he will take care of her, it like words of affirmation.

These two songs inspired me a lot in my writing in January, I tend to listen to the song over and over again just to capture the feelings of the songwriter and in some parts especially the confession of love by Jadon, some words there were inspired by the songs.

The first 20 pages I wrote was based on how I imagined the scenes to be, and I tried to modify them according to the books I have read on scriptwriting. I worked with pages, and I tried to capture and follow Syd views on how the first pages must get the audience captivated. I sometimes try to put myself in the characters position and look at stuffs from their perspective so I can better tell the story.

Some of the decisions I made was based on the instructions gotten from reading books as seen in the references, these books as aided me in my writing, they offer insight, clarity and corrections. from following Syd's (2005) opinion in pages.

Instructions and inspiration: With me, instructions and inspiration walk hand in hand, from receiving instructions from Pam my lecturer it was as if the gate of inspiration are opened to me, from her I got the idea of writing more scene about the love interest between Adepeju and Jadon. She once asked me what part I am focusing on whether it the love part or the fashion part and I was tongue tied and went back to deliberate, and I came to the conclusion after revisiting my laid down idea that love came on board because Adepeju was chasing her dream.

Instructions lead: Instruction will always lead one in the path they ought to follow. At first, I wasn't writing with courier font 12 and it was until Pam sent the book "how to format a screenplay" and I read it, I started making progress in my screenplay writing and formatting,

Actually, the most important decision I made was based on the fact that I had an idea, I had a story to put out, I had something I wanted people to know about. Writing the script is the most important decision made, from deciding to write the script, reading about what script is and what it means to write a script, all of this is based on the fact that I had an idea.

Who knew I can be a scriptwriter.

My name is KOMOLAFE OLUWALONI SUZAN I am now a SCRIPTWRITER.

I am a Nigerian 😂😊 I am a Christian, I am an artist, my mom's last child, I am now in the UK, amazing right? I am lovely I know and funny a little maybe not but then I am an onion, the more you peel the more you see but then I will not make you cry like onion does 🤣🤣😎.

Well, I studied theatre arts in my undergrad, and I have embarked on a lot of projects, now I am in the higher ground of postgrad and so far, I have done one project, a staged performance and I love it, it was loads of experience which I found necessary for my growth.

Over the years I have dabbled in a lot of things from dance to stage management to costuming, makeup but not scriptwriting. I never thought about scriptwriting. Still now, I still don't know what drew me into scriptwriting, maybe I had a beautiful idea which I couldn't ignore but then whatever the reason is or was, I am glad I did scriptwriting.

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening based on the time you are reading this. This Padlet will in one way or the other show you who I am. From the background color to the decisions made and how everything is interwoven will ultimately show you how I think and operate and who I really am and ultimately who I want to be.

A journey no matter how easy or complex, long or short it is, they all start one day, from that first small step to the ultimate big step. My journey as a scriptwriter started from a decision and to me doing my pitch.

The first picture on the pitch was taken by me in undergrad and that is about 4 years ago, the picture was inserted because I want it to tell people about my personality, I find the picture to be soothing and calm and a little bit wild. The pitch introduces me as I am, someone in love with culture and what it entails. People that greatly influenced the project and the research question. Embarking on projects is one of the many ways that gets me to satisfy my deep and intense hunger to know more about culture and how it has evolved.

The pitch settles my decision for scriptwriting and reflecting on the pitch:

I now have an idea of what a pitch is and how I ought to sell myself as a professional, the pitch did not do justice to my brand in general and it took attending classes with Ev and Pam to become enlightened.

During "My Journey", my researched question changed after a discussion with pam in class. The research question though changed in wordings, but I want to believe the end result will in one way answer this research questions below. The research question changed because of wording, the first question says does culture affect ones work as a performer? Whereas, for this project I am not a performer 🤣, I am not performing, I am a SCRIPTWRITER.

Robert in 1998 said: "Story is about archetypes, not stereotypes.

Story is about thoroughness, not shortcuts.

Story is about the realities, not the mysteries of writing.

Story is about mastering the arts, not second guessing the marketplace.

Story is about respect, not disdain, for the audience."

The above quote was taken from different page sin the book and they made me realize how profound and how simple scriptwriting is. Even if you are following you are ideas think about your audiences, when you are mastering this amazing art, don't let the marketplace be the priority, rather master the art and deliver masterpiece.

1. Originality: I think originality shows one's respect for the audience. But Robert thinks originality is the confluence of content and form, not what you say but how you say it, difference for the sake of difference is as empty as slavishly following commercial imperatives. originality goes beyond the concept of talent.

2. Creative Limitation

   • Research - Research stimulates talent

   • Memory - What do I know from personal experiences that touches on my characters' lives?

   • Fact - Do research, Feed your talents.

   • Imagination - What would it be like to live my characters life hour by hour, day by day?

3. Structure and genre - a film is armed with different sub-plot, characters, anticipation, boring and light moments, sophistication, confusion, conflict, harmony and so much more and this helps determine the genre a film will fall into. There are different types of genres and sub-genre. I want to believe that the structure of the script will be the determinant of the genre.

4. Characterization and Character: Characterization is all observable qualities of a human being, everything that can be known through careful and thorough scrutiny and examination. From race, age, IQ, EQ, sex, gestures, home, car, personality, all aspect of humanity that can be noted from day-to-day scrutiny. The totality of these traits makes one unique. While Character is revealed based on choices made under pressure, the greater the pressure, the deeper the revelation.
