Roan moved back with her parents after being dropped from her first label and gave herself a year to make it as an independent artist. When she moved back to LA in 2021, her song ‘Pink Pony Club’ blew up and she has had hits ever since. She went on tour with Olivia Rodrigo and had a tour of her own where she featured local drag queens at her shows. Chappell’s persona is the art of drag and she is inspired by many drag queens.

Compulsory Heterosexuality

Compulsory Heterosexuality, or comphet, is defined as “the theory that heterosexuality is assumed and enforced upon people in a patriarchal, allonormative, and heteronormative society.” The woman that Chappell is writing the song to is dealing with comphet. The main idea of ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ is that a romance between two women has gone awry when one of them won’t accept her feelings for women. Chappell described it as a song “wishing good luck to someone who is denying fate.” She uses her powerful vocals and versatile voice to allow the audience a glimpse into the heartbreak of their affair. In the bridge, the lyrics are,

“When you wake up next to him in the middle of the night

With your head in your hands, you're nothing more than his wife
And when you think about me, all of those years ago
You're standing face to face with "I told you so"”.

This is the most climactic part of the song and she is speaking explicitly about how this woman will regret denying her feelings years later and she will realize that she is nothing more than playing a part as a wife to this man. Chappell laments that she wants to be the one that someone calls baby, and won’t continue with someone who doesn’t. The song values a genuine, honest relationship and values standing up for yourself when someone won’t give you what you deserve. Not only is it a feminist anthem to stand up for yourself in your relationships, but it’s also a groundbreaking viral sapphic song about a queer relationship and a queer issue. It reflects the growing acceptance of LGBTQ+ people in otherwise heteronormative spaces.

My opinion

I really like this song. I agree and understand what Chappell is trying to say. Coming to terms with sexuality is a difficult process and can be confusing for people. Chappell has brought the issue of compulsory heterosexuality to the foreground. The lyrics in the first verse “You can say that we are nothing, but you know the truth” speak about how comphet makes people deny their feelings, even if it isn’t actually how they feel. When people listen to this song, they may relate to either perspective; the one who is denying their feelings and the one who is hurt by them doing so. I would argue that these feelings only actually apply to a WLW relationship, but people who don’t relate still enjoy the song because of the vocals, the emotion, and best of the music. All of these factors together make this a song that anyone could enjoy and dance to, but it might hit home for others a little more.
