In the education reform i learned about

Technology and Furniture. Their desks had three legs and were made of either oak or pine. The younger children sat up in the front of the desk and grade by grade. While the teacher was talking the students wouldnt talk or mess around they would pay attention to the teacher. In the 1880s the desks were bolted down to the floor so there was no moving around. Technology was way different then than it is now, they didnt have IPhones or Kindles they had Abacus's which are basically wooden balls put on rods to help do math.

Students who were late to class or did not hear the school bell would risk getting a punishment for tardiness. The leather strap was introduced in the 1850's and was used as a punishment.

Testing back then the kids had to stand up in the front of the class every day at the end of the day to see what they had learned that day

In schools penmanship was a very important school. students used goose quills and Ink. testing was also important. Students had to take a final exam at the end of 8th grade to get into high school. Teachers used wooden canes to enforce discipline. The threat of getting hit by the cane mad students obay the rules.

I learned that when kids

went to school they did not have enough time to go home to eat

lunch so they would bring food

in to school in metal buckets.

In the 1850s people were beaten with green wood students were often cut. In the 1890s the paddle was introduced and usually kept within sight behind the teachers desk . The threat of these devices was used as a motivator for students to be have in school.

for the lunch they had to eat out of metal containers and eat where ever they could find a place. they brought foods like bread and jam with dill pickles and hard boiled eggs
