My names may have unnecessary letters in them, but for me, they’re a necessity. Without them, you might mistake me for Justin Bieber or Lea Salonga. Funny how someone was named after two exceptional singers but can’t sing. This reality saddens me, but I have this thing where I always look for the positive side of things. Maybe I was not gifted the talent of singing because God knows I’d be too powerful if I could sing.

To get to know me further, I am the youngest among my parents’ five children. I’m so close to relating to Taylor Swift’s “Last Kiss” because almost all of my siblings are now living with their own families. The last thing I could do is to watch their life in pictures like I used to watch them sleep. Kidding aside, this year is the last year of my teens; I will be turning 20 next year, which makes me 19 years old, but not as of now—my birthday’s in August. I make good jokes; well, that’s what people say, which I also agree with. My parents had lived in Manila for almost a decade but decided to return home the same year I was born. I was born in the part of the CALABARZON Region of Luzon Island but was raised in the Queen City of the South, Cebu, specifically in Tuburan, my beloved hometown.

I spent my childhood with my grandparents and cousins, but as fate would have it, I tragically lost the two people who raised me before my parents. I came to live with my family after, in a very supportive household and full of positive energy. The same place, and people who taught me to live life according to the good precepts.

The moment we are born, we come with different challenges that will shake us, improve us, and alter our future. Even the most joyful of people is no match when hardships and obstacles of life strikes them. The most painful loss for me is when I lost my grandparents, my guardians in the absence of my parents. My life revolved around them, but life also is not permanent, it is something we borrowed and have to return, someday. The moment they took their last breath was shattered my everything. Fate separated me from them, but I chose to move forward and saw it as an opportunity to get to know my parents, rather than embracing the negative effect of the loss. Second is when pandemic happened, life during those time is unreasonably hard. We lost our means of living, and it was an “isang kahig, isang tuka” for me, and my family.

Having to face unimaginable hardships at an early age learned me two things. Nothing is permanent in this world, not life and not even a pandemic. Second is that there will always be a rainbow after a rain. If you just look at the positive sides of things, you will learn that life is not as cruel as you think. Being in my situation three years ago made me realize that the only person who can help you is you. Once God is done with his duties on you, you must make a move to finish what he started. Be your own knight, wear your shining armor and fight your own battle, because no one will be there to do that for you.

I got confused about my sexuality. I grew affections with the same gender, something I should feel towards a male. But at some point of my life, I once liked someone in the opposite gender, but that didn’t last long. When I was in high school I finally concluded that I’m the gay cousin, it was not a phase, not something that will just go away, it is something that has always been inside of me. I just have so many love in me that I can give it or feel it for both gender. This, I think is a fun fact because I always deny the fact that I’m actually not straight for some reasons.
