Plants grow and reproduce in the top layer of soil which is just above the permafrost layer. Trees do not grow in the Tundra. In summer, it's he only season that the plants grow in Tundra. This season is about 50 or 60 days when there is also lots of surface water. Plants adapt in Tundra by grouping together to survive the strong winds and cold temperatures. Plants in Tundra include low shurbs, flowers, lichens, sedges, mosses, grasses and liverworts.

Summers are very short and cool, lasting only about 6 to 10 weeks and the winters are very long and very cold. In the winter months the sun barely rises and it is dark for most of the day. Summers and winter are the Tundra's 2 main seasons.
There is also a lot of permafrost, ice that never goes away in the ground.
Absolutely the trees can't grow here because of the elevation being so high.
Rainfall in many arctic regions totals six to ten inches a year.

Animals have many adaptation to survive. Migration and hibernation are examples of adaptations used by animals in the Artic tundra. There are many animals that don't live all year in the tundra that means they leave or migrate for a long time to warmer climates.

Hibernation is a combination of behavioral and physical adaptations. For example, during the summer the brown bear's behavior is to eat just about anything it can find.

The Tundra is the coldest of all of the biomes. The permanently frozen ground in the Tundra is called the permafrost, the Tundra is cold all year. Summer is very brief with milder temperatures when the sun shines wich is almost 24 hours a day. The Tundra has been called "the land of the midnight sun". One fifth of the Earth is a Tundra biome.

Plants in the Tundra have addapted in different ways:

They grow close together, low to the ground and they remain small.

Many plants in the biome have a wax type of fuzzy, hairy coating on them which helps to shield them from the cold and the wind. This coating helps them to retain heat and moisture and it protects the plants seeds.

Plants found here will typically have small leaves which helps the plants to retain moisture.

The most of plants in the Tundra are perenials and don't die off in the winter.
