I chose this excerpt because while reading this passage I quickly became infuriated. I was shocked at how inhumane and cruel the Nazis actions were, but it also seemed a little bit familiar form my Babcia’s stories that she used to tell me from when she was little. No, she wasn’t in the camps but she grew up around the same atmosphere as the Jews. This passage makes me wonder what other unspeakable things they have done that only the ghosts know. How did the mass extinction even come so far? How did this all begin to start?

I chose this passage because it really spoke to me. I was moved by this passage because this could be the last time our main character sees his mom and he doesn’t know it, but neither do the readers. This keeps the readers questioning whether or not his mom is alive.

I chose this passage because when I read it my mind was trying to wrap around the concept of what I had just read. I was unable to grasp this horrific chain of events. I was as a loss for words and it ached inside that humans were treated this way. This passage makes me wonder what other unspeakable things went on that our main character was unable to notice or what was so bad that it was never to be spoken of again. What drove people to do these unspeakable things?

I chose this passage because before reading this book I did not know that Jews had to drag the bodies out of the gas chambers. I was completely at a loss for words to try and understand what they went through because I will never know the pain they went through. This passage makes me wonder what these people did if they were set free, how did they go about their life?

This passage causes suspense within the story. It causes me to wonder if this plan will be successful and save his life. Would anyone else be punished for her decision.

Michael shows extreme strength and how he has grown in Auschwitz. This passage shows is him pain and mystery he endured during his time there. This passage makes me wonder how he was able to go and life if he knew he might not see his mom again. What would he have done if he never saw his mother again? How different would the story be?

I chose this passage because the wording is extremely powerful. The reader can feel the emotion through the page as it is being read. This gives the reader hope for the rest of the story. But also, makes the reader wonder what else is in store for Michael after he is free. The majority of the book is left and this passage sets the tone for the rest of the book.

I chose this passage because it was a very uplifting memory within the story. It makes the reader feel comfortable and happy. But this also shows the dark part each person in the family faced. In general Michales determination for his mom to return helped the story develop. This passage makes me wonder what else is in store for Michaels’ family.

In this quote Ruth had to depart from her family. This was a detrimental event for the reader to read because you could feel their pain in the passage. I chose this quote because it was important and demonstrates how the Nazis tore apart families. This passage makes me wonder if Ruth will ever see her family again.
