Ann Masten: Children’s natural resilience is nurtured through ‘ordinary magic’

"We had ideas about that and we expected, for example, that we would find that families and parents who had their acts together were important, that good parenting really matters when children are experiencing difficulties. We figured that some of the children’s own capabilities, their abilities to think, solve problems, to control their behavior, that those would also play a role." -Ann Masten

Ann Masten has completed research that was funded through grants from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, the William T. Grant Foundation, the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Mental Health. Her research focuses on the ways resilience is developed in adolescents and adults. The main goal for her research is to inform policy makers on how to create effective environments to foster resilience. In her study of urban children over ten years, she discovered that children who were higher functioning intellectually and experienced higher quality parenting had better academic outcomes, conduct, and peer social competence, even when faced with extreme adversity.
