Beach Erosion in N.C.- the issue

Beach erosion in north carolina is a major problem caused by rising sea levels and natural disasters that wear away the land. Beach erosion can also be caused by human interference. The removal of beach sediment and the redistribution of it is the issue. The loss of sand causes the beach to become narrower and lower in elevation. Waves carry sand out into sand bars and it gets brought back onto land. This messes up the elevation of beaches causing economic problems and environmental issues. It may be caused by hydraulic action, abrasion, impact and corrosion.

Solutions

There are some different solutions to the problem but the issue is they can be very expensive. Sea walls can be built to prevent water from eroding the cliffs. There is something similar called a break water that prevents sediment from being washed away. Along with the costliness of it there is the fact that these hardstructures and more cause erosion in other places by moving the source and directing it to another area. There are also living coastlines which serve the same purpose as hard structures but are made out of completely living things. They provide habitats to animals and are also more pleasant to look at. Beside the hard structures there are soft methods such as sandbags or dunes that are barriers.

The coastal towns and structures like houses and restaurants are most affected. The nature is less affected by beach erosion. It effects the aquatic biomes at the ocean side the most. It also destroys estuaries and coastal wetlands. This can be along the gulf coast or on the east coast in places such as North Carolina. Many people live in coastal towns and there is a large economy and food source there. In wetlands and estuaries there is a lot of wildlife that has to be relocated when the coastlines are destroyed. Plant life has no nutrients when the land is destroyed and this means plants die.

This video shows that the rising sea levels are causing increased beach erosion and eventually the levels are going to be so high homes and businesses flood. The people in these places are not willing to move and leave the home they love.
