This image was painted by Tompkins Harrison Matterson in 1853. The trial was held in Salem, MA. It illustrates an old man begging for his life as the judge is looking at him. It also shows people holding up their arms in the background maybe not wanting the old man to be jailed or hanged. Over 200 people were accused of being Witches in 1692, during the Witch Trials.

Puritans

Puritans were English Protestants who were religious and originally from the England Church. They tried to get rid of the Catholic Church, however King James I did not like that. They fled England, ended up in the ''New World'' and formed the Massachusetts Bay Colony. By establishing the colony they did it so they could practice their beliefs without harassment. With the belief they had it ended up terrorizing the Puritans with a witch hunt.

McCarthyism

McCarthyism, which is also known as the Second Red Scare, was a campaign against alleged communists in the US government and other institutions carried out under Senator Joseph McCarthy around 1950-1954. During this period, many would be questioned if they were a communist or not. If they didn't answer they were put into jail, many people's lives were ruined, and lots of times people were blacklisted. McCarthy would put out a list of every alleged communist out there. People fear for their lives during this period.

Witches in Salem

The witch trials kept on growing and growing with people being accused of being witches. When a person they're taken to trial usually either taken to prison or executed by hanging. The Puritans believed that the devil was behind this making people go insane and sick. They also believed that Satan wasn't behind it but recruited witches and black magic users as well. This feared people even more.

Calvinism

Calvinism is the Protestant theological system of John Calvin and his successors. Calvinists believe in the grace of God and that all people are sinful very similar to Puritians. To them, prayer to God was the right thing and everything else was prohibited. The Puritans and Calvinists are both very similar due to them being very strict followers of God and followers of John Calvin. Calvinism did not allow the crucifix, but did however the plain cross was allowed since it was not demonic.
