The future of education in the Philippines covered and outlined by Department of Education Undersecretary for Administration Kristian Ablan. He discussed the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead in ensuring that the Philippine educational system satisfies students' changing demands and equips them for success in the twenty-first century. The conversation intends to spur discussion on how to foster creativity and cooperation to attain educational excellence and build a better future for Filipino youth. The country director for Google Philippines, Bernadette Nacario, shared the major factors that are influencing and propelling innovations in the world's educational systems. These patterns are covered in a three-part international report from Google's Future of Education project, which was conducted in 24 countries in partnership with Canvas8, the international non-profit American Institutes for project, and the research firm Canvas8.

 

In this momentous event, I believe that technology is an element of growth that practically covers every aspect of our culture and has an impact on how we study, work, and live. I also think that it has become crucial for the education sector to embrace this technology in the teaching-learning process as a result of the global technical improvement brought about by the creation of wireless and mobile devices. EduTech is the practice of learning and teaching through the effective use of technology. In my opinion, it makes easier to comprehend technology's fundamental principles and functions on an advanced level. There are many goals for educational technology that are designed to help the teaching-learning process produce the best outcomes in an effective manner.

The 2016 Philippine presidential election was a pivotal moment for the nation, marked not only by its importance but also by the extensive and innovative use of ICT to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process. One key element of this election revolution was the implementation of the Vote Counting Machines (VCMs) and the transmission of results through the Election Management System (EMS).


The use of VCMs, which electronically scanned and counted the votes, was a remarkable leap forward in the country's electoral technology. These machines not only expedited the voting process but also reduced the risk of human error, making the election results more accurate and trustworthy. The real-time transmission of results through the EMS allowed for swift updates, increasing transparency and trust in the electoral process.

The Greeks implemented one of the earliest forms of democracy; their ballot system required their voters to handwrite their chosen candidates in pots. Early elections called for a system similar to that wherein the votes were handwritten and the results were counted one by one by human beings, this continued in the Philippines as well until the 2016 Presidential Election.

The 2016 election was headed by COMELEC and they used a Precint Count Optical Scan, which used computers and networks to gather data (related to ICT). The citizen’s vote was fed and transmitted into a machine and counted automatically. By using electronic devices, the results of the voting were followed much more efficiently compared to previous elections.

Fe Primitiva del Mundo, also known as Dr. Fe del Mundo, is a distinguished woman who saved countless of lives from starvation and death with her services and life-changing innovations. She is the woman who transformed medical practice in the Philippines by developing ground-breaking vaccines and jaundice treatments while also giving care for thousands of underprivileged families. Furthermore, she was the first ever female president of the Philippine Pediatric Society and in 1957, she also founded the children’s medical center foundation. In a similar note, In 1941, Dr. Fe del Mundo is credited for conducting a research that resulted in the medical incubator's creation. Even though Dr. Fe del Mundo created an incubator that is made out of bamboo and hot water, her invention has led to today’s life saving innovation where we now have an improved incubator where technology is the main source for its functionality. With the use of technology,  the incubators are now unbelievably convenient and accessible where it truly saved countless of lives as it provides a extra support for infants until they are able to breathe and function well on their own.

As a baby who was born prematurely, I am truly grateful for this technology-enhanced incubator because it saved my life and many other babies across the world. This innovation has helped me breathe and maintain my normal body temperature at the moment that I was unable to do so. With that, I would say that this event may not be recognized by the mass but I can say that it is truly a momentous event not only for the Philippines, but also to all the countries as it welcomes the lives of newborn babies and because of the service it provides for the healthcare of many infants worldwide.

To manage these challenges, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, IATF-EID Chief Implementer Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, Deputy Chief Implementer of the IATF’s National Action Plan Against COVID-19, BCDA President Vince Dizon, Health Undersecretary Leopoldo Vega, DPWH Undersecretary Emil Sadain, and MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim established the One Hospital Command Center (OHCC) at the MMDA Headquarters in Makati City. The OHCC is a health care referral facility that aims to rapidly address the rising number of COVID-19 cases through monitoring and providing real-time data on the capacity of public and private hospitals in the Philippines. The Center was created to assist and refer Filipinos to appropriate healthcare institutions that still have the capacity to accommodate and guarantee a slot for them. The public can access the center in three different ways: by scanning their Quick Response Code, by calling their hotlines, and through the free Pure Force Citizens application. Once the center is reached, they will provide assistance in checking the availability of public and private health centers and wherever the patient wishes to be admitted. In the event that patients need assistance with transportation, the Center can also attend to them through the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Philippine Red Cross, and some local government units. Moreover, the Center strengthens public health capacity through the addition of ICU beds to aid patients with severe and critical cases of COVID-19.  In spite of the government’s main purpose in establishing OHCC, their service is not only limited to COVID cases, according to a medical officer of the center; they also helped other patients who needed various medical assistance, such as labor, psychiatric needs, injuries, etc. On September 7, 2020, it was reported that the center had successfully closed 2,202 out of 2,447 cases to date, indicating a 90 percent success rate in its ability to help and accommodate Filipinos with medical needs. Thus, the palace urges the public to contact the center so that they will be able to assist them and prevent the overloading of hospitals. 

The Command Center is a shining example of how ICT plays a major role in our society. It does not only serve as entertainment but rather as an easier and more efficient form of communication that would be able to support healthcare operations. Despite those who crossed the great divide, I am pleased to know that a lot of people recovered and were saved at the hands of OHCC. On a final note, I fully understand that we should not rely too heavily on technology, but it makes me feel secure that, with good use, there are several ways in which ICT can help everyone.

January 22, 2020 was the heart-stopping moment for every Filipino in the country, the first case of the novel virus COVID-19 was investigated and reported. And soon, within the blink of an eye cases kept increasing everyday with concern and fear felt in the hearts of Filipinos. And before we knew it, the country was already in a lockdown. A lockdown that lasted for a long time filled with bittersweet memories carved in the minds and hearts of our fellow citizens.

For once, the country fell silent. The roads weren’t filled with vehicles anymore, schools, malls and other places weren’t noisy anymore, every work was suspended, and hospitals became filled and busy. But that didn’t mean the country would stop functioning. Instead a new normal was introduced via usage of technology. 

ICT was fully utilized and maximized to its abilities. During the period of lockdown, it was the main instrument used in communication, socialization, even in entertainment, and other forms of interactions. Families, friends, and other people were able to remain connected through ICT via messages, video calls, texts, and many more. It was also the primary tool used in addressing news and updates to the public regarding COVID-19 and other important reports. Schools used ICT to continue classes online through Zoon, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and many more.

But wait, there’s more to it! Thanks to ICT the boredom of people was cured. Endless trends like dalgona coffees to dances, challenges, and clips from the apps like TikTok, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter (now called X), and more existed. ICT indeed played a huge role during the peak and time of COVID-19 in the Philippines both for serious and entertainment purposes. It lightened the burden Filipinos felt during this dark time and was able to help the country in general with its effect still felt until now.

This further proves that ICT plays a powerful role in benefitting and improving all aspects of the world.

 

ICT: A Catalyst for Change 

 

The 2010 Presidential Election in the Philippines was historic for several reasons. Firstly, it marked the end of the presidency of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who had been in power for nearly a decade, amid allegations of electoral fraud and corruption. Secondly, it was the first nationwide automated election in the country's history, made possible using ICT. 

 

In the years leading up to the election, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) partnered with technology companies to implement an electronic voting system. The system utilized Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) technology, which allowed voters to mark their choices on paper ballots, which were then scanned and tabulated electronically. Additionally, the results were transmitted digitally to the COMELEC's central server, providing real-time updates to the public. 

 

The Impact of ICT on the 2010 Election 

 

Increased Transparency: ICT greatly enhanced the transparency of the election process. With the real-time transmission of results, the public could access up-to-the-minute information on the vote count, reducing opportunities for tampering or manipulation. This newfound transparency instilled confidence in the electoral process and ensured that the will of the people would be accurately reflected. 

 

Faster Results: In previous elections, manual counting often led to delays in announcing results. With ICT, the election results were known within hours after polls closed, reducing tension and uncertainty. This rapid turnaround was crucial in maintaining peace and order in the country. 

 

Reduced Fraud: The automated system minimized the possibility of human error and fraud. It became significantly more difficult for unscrupulous individuals to tamper with ballots or manipulate the count. This contributed to a fairer and more credible election. 

 

Increased Voter Participation: ICT also played a role in boosting voter participation. With the automated system, voting became more convenient, and there was a reduced likelihood of long queues and inefficiencies at polling stations. This encouraged more citizens to exercise their right to vote.

Scarab, the alien technology that was linked to the body of main protagonist Jaime Reyes portrayed on screen by Xolo Mariduea, is voiced by Inka. In the Philippine cinematic version, Scarab was referred to as Khaji-Da.

Warner Bros. Philippines specifically sought out Inka for this specific role.

Magnaye shared that she was “wildly honored” to have gotten the opportunity and teased that some of her lines were also in Filipino. 

The Philippines is the first country in Asia where a local artist will be granting their voice to the film, making Inka the first Filipino voice actress to participate in a DC film. 

Apart from knowing that she had a role in making the motion picture, Inka believes the Filipino viewers would connect with Jaime and "Blue Beetle" as a whole since the movie puts more emphasis on family than the majority of superhero films, and the protagonists generally figure out how to deal with their powers on their own.

GCash, under the subsidiary of Mynt, Globe Telecom’s Fintech Innovations was officially launched in 2004, offering SMS-based domestic money transfer services that do not require bank accounts or cards. In 2006, GCash expanded its services to include online payments and users had to register their bank accounts online and link them to their bank accounts or credit cards.

GCash was relaunched as a full-pledged mobile wallet in 2009, that offered various ranges of financial services from money transfer, and bill payment, to online shopping. The mobile wallet was designed to be more user-friendly and intuitive, as well as be accessible through a mobile app. The relaunch marked a significant achievement for GCash, solidifying its leadership role in the mobile payments sector within the Philippines.

I would say that such experiences heightened my sense of direction since I already know where the branches of my favorite stores and the restrooms are at, by my fourth or fifth visit. This is why it’s a bit disconcerting to see a store or even a stall that I once passed by to be shuttered down or empty. Sure, there are usually signs that it’s going to close. You can always tell by the volume of the people and how consistent that volume actually is but you still don’t want it to close. Especially if you’re actually one of their most loyal customers and you have memories of that place that you would not really want to let go of.

I guess that’s why I’ve been rather impartial to Tropical Hut’s plight. I see that restaurant in every single one of my favorite restaurants that the malls closed down because it wasn’t earning enough money or something along those lines. Except this time, the branch actually had a happy ending.

The beginning for this restaurant started in 1962. It’s genuinely even older than my parents who are both in their early fifties and Jollibee - an actual cultural icon in this country. It was your run of the mill sari-sari store before it became a grocery store and then a supermarket that served coffee on the side. Then, it was bought by the Mercury Group of Companies (famous for Mercury Drug) in 1972 and they’ve owned it ever since.

It all came crashing down eventually since it soon became overshadowed by Jollibee, Max’s, and even foreign restaurants like Mcdonald’s and KFC. One blog likened it to a jeepney, citing how both never changed with the times and soon it got abandoned. Left in the wind to trail behind more famous names, perpetually struggling to catch up behind them. Considering that it’s still up and running today, many would even say that it’s destined to die a slow death in the face of today’s modern techy era.

But, in a surprise twist of events, technology saved Tropical Hut and it proved itself to be exactly like the jeepney - never changing and but still nonetheless appreciated for its timelessness and the amount of memories created inside there.

It started with one person: stock analyst JP Tanyag, who remarked over being the sole customer in the restaurant’s Escolta branch. His tweet pictured at the beginning of the article was made at around five in the afternoon during the previous year’s Independence Day and the pictures, well, they told a thousand of words.

The aged lettering of its name reminds many of the constant passage of time. The same goes for its red walls and green chairs, which breathe the same archaic air, juxtaposed against the recently cooked fries and burger combo with a nice coke on the side. It’s both past and present combined together. Perhaps, that’s the reason why one became two and two became a thousand then it became thirty-five thousand. 

Soon, everyone was reminiscing about Tropical Hut. Insert *branch name* here and *childhood experience* here, all the while they rattled off the various food items they enjoyed there from bistek to daing to their famous burger. Some even say that the restaurant’s customers never waned, after all, @jimnasiumNTH did say that some senior citizens still dined at the old Sta. Lucia East branch.

It feels like you’re reuniting with an old classmate of yours that you haven’t seen since high school. You were very close with one another but tragic circumstances forced you out of each others’ lives until you were able to reconnect through Facebook. And that’s the magic of ICT.

If such technology didn’t exist, if there was no method for us to communicate with another, if there were no ways to revisit previously seen locations, we would have never heard of Tropical Hut ever again. It would have been killed successfully. However, we were able to reverse its fortune and that’s how powerful ICT is in general. Hope can be granted to you with a snap of a finger and despair can be waived off just as easily. Their employment rates skyrocketed after that and they even opened up a new branch in BGC just this May.

While this isn’t necessarily a momentous event in the Philippines for ICT, it is a ray of sunshine in an otherwise dismal rain. Sometimes, what can get us going is the knowledge that we don’t have to leave the things we love behind. We can easily bring them into the new future.

Old friends don’t need to remain apart, pictures don’t have to be dirtied beyond recognition, books don’t need to be chewed through by termites. ICT has given us the power to preserve. It gives us the opportunity to bring back the good times. Things may not be the same anymore but at least everything’s still in one piece.

Success isn’t guaranteed for Tropical Hut. It’s still an aged relic of a bygone era but it has become topical once again. A Topical Hut if you will. Change can still happen and it could very well take out the good fortune blessed to this restaurant but it was given an opportunity. To be remembered and to be loved once again. Don’t we want that for everybody?

After the disaster struck the country, Google launched a Yolanda People Finder, with the background built by Google engineers.  It was first used in other countries such as New Zealand and Japan following earthquakes in both of them in 2011. The Yolanda People Finder's role was to allow users to post messages and search for their own families or friends who had been affected by the typhoon, which was the most important thing that everyone needed at the time. Because it keeps a record of everyone who has been affected, the entire database will search for any information about an individual.

This platform was extremely beneficial to all individuals, particularly those affected by natural disasters, and it contributed to the success of ICT in leading changes in all aspects of economic, social, and political relationships in society. This means that I firmly believe in incorporating developments from the past in order to enhance the present. Without this site, it would be extremely difficult to stay in touch with everyone, including those living outside the Philippines, and this is the role of ICT in Philippine history.

The hashtag #StopTheKillings trended globally and symbolized the unity of the movement. These advancements in technology enabled activists to coordinate protests, share information about human rights violations, and connect with more Filipinos beyond the boundaries of their organizations. The power of digital communication transcended traditional limitations, effectively amplifying the voices of those advocating for justice and accountability while standing in defense of those facing injustice.

While the path to justice and human rights remains long and arduous, the use of ICT has undeniably helped propel the cause forward, inspiring hope that the Philippines and the world can collectively strive for a more just and equitable future. 

However, it is important to acknowledge that this digital revolution comes with its own set of challenges. While this demonstrates how these tools can be harnessed to mobilize collective action, disseminate crucial information, and hold those in power accountable, it also carries the risk of spreading false or malicious information. Hence, the key takeaway here is the importance of using technology wisely, especially in light of the ever-evolving landscape of ICT. It's not the technology itself that is inherently good or bad; its impact depends on how it is harnessed by its users.
