Are these scenarios examples of innovation? As you develop your responses, create a list of criteria you believe should be met in a lesson that allows students to be innovative.

1. Students rewrite a Shakespeare play for a teenage audience but do not perform it.

2. Students write letters to the town council about their ideas for adding pedestrian crossings in their town AND mail the letters to council members.

3. Students investigate 2 or more online websites or games, and develop a presentation about internet safety guidelines for parents and students to be aware of. Their product is handed in for a grade.

4. Students analyze statistics on the basketball teams’ past performance and create mathematical models for the coach to illustrate targeted improvements for both team and individual performance.

goes beyond memorization.
Needs to involve a problem.
Needs to involve critical thinking/reflection
Making Connections.
Students decide what research is relevant.
There has to be choice; open ended possibilities.
Applying a concept to new setting; it has to be transferable.
It is skill based.
Students need to understand the question properly to understanding what skill they need to use; so thinking needs to be involved.

Real World Problem Solving.

You need a real world application; must be able to see the reaction of others to your work to see if it works.
Problem solving in areas that are most meaningful and closest to home; often times at a local level.
Must integrate theory, but also go beyond the immediacy of the classroom if possible.
Must incorporate passion so that it is real for the student!
