إِنَّمَآ أَشْكُوا۟ بَثِّى وَحُزْنِىٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ

The 4 main contents in the hadith are:-

i. The pillars of Islam

ii. The pillars of Iman (faith)

iii. Ihsan (spiritual existence)

iv. Yaumul Qiyamah (the day of judgment)

1. The Incident:

The hadith begins with a description of a man, later identified as the Angel Gabriel (Jibril), who appeared before the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in the form of a human. The man had very white clothes, extremely black hair, and showed no signs of travel, though no one in the community recognized him. He sat down close to the Prophet and asked a series of questions.

2. The Pillars of Islam:

The first question asked by Gabriel was, “What is Islam?” The Prophet responded by explaining the five fundamental acts of worship that constitute the Pillars of Islam:

1. Shahada: The testimony of faith, declaring that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger.

2. Salat: Performing the five daily prayers.

3. Zakat: Giving the obligatory charity to the needy.

4. Sawm: Fasting during the month of Ramadan.

5. Hajj: Performing the pilgrimage to Mecca, if physically and financially able.

3. The Pillars of Iman (Faith):

Next, Gabriel asked, “What is Iman (faith)?” The Prophet explained the six Pillars of Iman:

1. Belief in Allah: The oneness of God.

2. Belief in Angels: The creation of Allah, tasked with specific roles.

3. Belief in the Books: The divine scriptures revealed to various prophets, such as the Torah, Psalms, Gospel, and Qur’an.

4. Belief in the Messengers: Prophets sent by Allah.

5. Belief in the Day of Judgment: The day when all will be resurrected and judged for their deeds.

6. Belief in Qadar (Divine Decree): Understanding that everything, good and bad, happens by the will and knowledge of Allah.

4. Ihsan (Spiritual Excellence):

Gabriel then asked, “What is Ihsan?” The Prophet responded: “It is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then know that He sees you.”

• Ihsan represents the highest level of faith, where one's worship and behavior are marked by a deep sense of awareness of Allah's presence, even if it is not physically observable. It emphasizes sincerity, mindfulness, and striving for excellence in worship.

5. The Hour (Day of Judgment):

Finally, Gabriel asked about the Hour (the Day of Judgment), to which the Prophet replied that neither he nor Gabriel knew the exact time of the Hour. However, the Prophet described some signs of the approaching Day, including:

• Social upheavals such as the spread of ignorance, disobedience, and immorality.

• People who were previously destitute and barefoot shepherds would compete in building tall structures.

6. Gabriel’s Departure:

After the questions, the man left, and the Prophet explained to the companions that it was the Angel Gabriel, who came to teach them their religion.

1. Belief in Allah
   We emphasized the importance of understanding Tawhid, or the oneness of Allah. There are three types of Tawhid that we discussed:

   
   

   • Tawhid al-Rububiyyah

     The belief in Allah's lordship, that He is the Creator, Sustainer, and Controller of the universe. Everything that happens is by His will and decree.

   • Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah

     The belief that Allah alone is worthy of worship, and all acts of devotion should be directed solely to Him without associating any partners.

   • Tawhid al-Asma' wa Sifat

     The belief in Allah's names and attributes, affirming that His attributes are unique and beyond comparison to His creation. These names and attributes help us understand His perfection.

     
     

2. Belief in Angels
   Angels are beings created by Allah from light, and they are free from sin. They are completely obedient to Allah, fulfilling tasks such as recording our deeds, guarding us, and carrying out Allah’s commands throughout the universe.

   Each angel has specific duties; for example, Angel Jibril is tasked with delivering revelation, while Angels Munkar and Nakir question souls in the grave. Belief in angels affirms the unseen aspects of the universe and reminds us of Allah's continuous presence in our lives.

   
   

3. Belief in the Books of Allah
   Believing in the divine scriptures revealed by Allah is an essential part of Iman. These books were sent to guide humanity, including the Torah given to Moses (Musa), the Bible (Injil) given to Jesus (ʿĪsa), the Psalms (Zabur) given to David (Dawud), and the Qur’an given to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Each scripture contained guidance suited to its time and people. The Qur’an is the final and complete revelation, sent for all of humanity, and it will remain unaltered until the Day of Judgment. It serves as a comprehensive source of knowledge and law for Muslims.

4. Belief in Prophets

   -Allah sent prophets to every nation to guide them towards the truth and to worship Him alone.

   
   

Characteristics of the Messenger

• Truthful (As-Sadiq) – The Messenger always spoke the truth, never lying in word or action.

• Trustworthy (Al-Amin) – He was entrusted with the most important messages and missions from Allah.

• Fulfills Trusts (Amanah) – The Messenger was known for fulfilling promises and responsibilities with utmost care.

• Upright (Al-Hadi) – The Messenger lived righteously and led by example in all aspects of life.

• Wise (Al-Hakim) – He demonstrated wisdom in both religious and worldly matters.

  
  

Prophet & Messenger’s Tawhid

• Surah Al-Anbiya' 21:25 – "We did not send any messenger before you, but We revealed to him that: 'There is no god but Me, so worship Me.'" This verse emphasizes that obedience to the Messenger is equivalent to obedience to Allah.

  
  

Necessity of the Messenger

• Convey Allah’s Message – Without the Messenger, humanity would be unable to understand the purpose of our creation or how to live a life pleasing to Allah.

• Guide Humanity to Worship Allah – The Messenger taught us how to worship Allah properly and avoid associating partners with Him.

• Clarify the Purpose of Existence – The Messenger explains why we were created and what our ultimate goals should be.

• Show Humanity the Right Path – Through the Messenger, we learn how to attain Paradise and avoid the punishment of Hell.

• Establish Proof – The existence of messengers is a proof against those who deny the truth, making clear that they received guidance.

• Unveil the Unseen World – Through revelation, the Messenger informs us of the unseen realities, such as angels, the afterlife, and Paradise and Hell.

• Provide Practical Examples – Human nature desires relatable examples, and the Messenger exemplifies how we should live according to Allah's commands.

  
  

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): The Greatest Blessing

• Sent to Both Humans and Jinn – Prophet Muhammad is unique in being sent as a Messenger to both mankind and jinn.

• Instilled Fear in Disbelievers – He was able to fight the disbelievers because Allah placed fear in their hearts when confronting him.

• The Earth as a Place of Worship – For Prophet Muhammad, the entire Earth was made pure and a place of worship.

• Guidance on War Booty – He provided clear guidance on how war booty should be distributed fairly and justly during his time.

  
  

Applications in Daily Life

How can we emulate his lifestyle? Even before prophethood, he was known as Al-Amin (the Trustworthy), living a life worth emulating.

• Gratitude – The Prophet taught us that whoever is not grateful to people is not truly grateful to Allah.

• Tolerance – He showed tolerance, like when a Bedouin urinated in the mosque, and the Prophet calmly instructed others not to scold him, but to clean it up and teach the man.

• Repentance – Even though the Prophet was sinless (maʿsum), he constantly sought forgiveness from Allah, showing us the importance of repentance.

• Simplicity – The Prophet lived a simple life, as exemplified in his guidance to Mu’adh bin Jabal, advising him not to indulge in luxury but to live modestly.

• Equality – The Prophet made it clear that no one has special rights over others; the most honored in the sight of Allah is the one with the most taqwa (piety).

• Moderation – He emphasized living a balanced life, avoiding extremes in both worldly and religious matters.

• Patience – He taught that patience is one of the greatest gifts a believer can have.

• Humanity – The Prophet always showed compassion and kindness to everyone, regardless of their faith.

• Accountability – He encouraged believers to take responsibility for their actions and strive for self-improvement.

• Kindness – The Prophet practiced kindness, even towards those who wronged him, embodying forgiveness and mercy in all his dealings.

It encompasses the belief in the Day of Judgment (Yawm al-Qiyamah), where all of creation will be resurrected (al-Hasyr) and held accountable for their deeds. On this day, those whose good deeds outweigh their bad deeds will enter Paradise, while those whose bad deeds are heavier will face punishment in Hell. This belief shapes a Muslim's perspective on life, guiding their actions and intentions.

Significance of Belief in the Hereafter

• Core Message of the Prophets

  Every prophet brought the message of belief in the Hereafter, as it is central to understanding accountability and the consequences of one's actions.

• Differentiating Believers from Disbelievers

  Those who deny the Hereafter and its reality are considered kafir (disbelievers), as they reject an essential aspect of faith.

• Purpose of Life

  Belief in the Hereafter gives purpose to life, reminding believers that their time on Earth is temporary, and their ultimate goal is to attain Allah’s pleasure and the rewards of the afterlife.

  
  

Effects of Belief in the Hereafter

• Demonstrates Allah’s Completeness and Greatness

  The establishment of the Hereafter showcases Allah's justice, wisdom, and ability to reward and punish, emphasizing His control over both this life and the next.

• Increases the Desire to Meet Allah

  For the believer, the anticipation of the Hereafter strengthens the love for meeting Allah and receiving His mercy.

• Greatest Joy for Believers

  Paradise is the ultimate reward, where the believers will experience the greatest joy, including the vision of Allah, which is described as the highest form of happiness.

• Instills Fear of Accountability

  Belief in the Hereafter instills a sense of fear and accountability in believers, encouraging them to live righteously and avoid sinful actions that may lead to punishment in the Hereafter.

Belief in Qada' and Qadar refers to predestination and the divine decree. It means that everything that happens in the universe has been predetermined by Allah. Qada' refers to Allah's eternal knowledge of what will happen, while Qadar refers to His determination and execution of these events in the right time and manner. This belief reminds us that Allah has complete control over all events, both good and bad.

The Four Components of Qada’ & Qadar

1. Knowledge – Allah’s knowledge is complete and perfect. He knows everything that has happened, is happening, and will happen, even before it occurs.

2. Writing – Allah has written everything that will happen in the Luh Mahfuz (Preserved Tablet), detailing the fate of all creation.

3. Will – Allah’s will is absolute; nothing happens except by His permission and will.

4. Creation – Allah is the creator of all things, including the actions and events that unfold. He creates everything according to His wisdom and plan.

Benefits of Belief in Qada’ & Qadar

• Peace of Mind – Belief in predestination brings tranquility, as we are not overly disturbed by worries about the future. We trust that whatever happens is part of Allah's plan.

• Acceptance – This belief teaches us to accept outcomes with patience and gratitude, knowing that everything is by Allah’s will.

• Willpower and Determination – Understanding that Allah has given us the ability to act within His will encourages us to work hard and strive for the best.

• Modesty and Humility – Belief in Qada’ and Qadar instills humility, as we acknowledge that our successes are by Allah’s decree, not solely by our efforts.

• Total Dependence on Allah – It strengthens our reliance on Allah, knowing that He is in control of everything and that we must seek His help in all affairs.

• Avoiding Bad Manners – It helps us avoid arrogance, as we recognize that our achievements and failures are by Allah’s will.

• Establish Good Manners – It encourages gratitude for Allah's blessings and patience in difficult times, leading to better character and manners.

Ihsan

The term Ihsan (الإحسان) is derived from the word hasan (حسن), meaning "goodness" or "beauty." Ihsan appears approximately 211 times in the Qur’an in various forms, emphasizing its importance in Islam.

Characteristics of a Muhsin (One Who Practices Ihsan)

1. Doing good to others – A Muhsin consistently shows kindness and generosity to others.

2. Doing good in the best possible way – A Muhsin not only helps others but strives to do so in the most excellent and complete manner.

3. Doing good for the sake of Allah – The motivation behind all these good deeds is the desire to please Allah alone.

Prophets Who Exemplified Ihsan

- Prophet Musa (Moses) – Prophet Musa displayed Ihsan by enduring hardship in delivering the message to his people and guiding them through challenges, showing persistence and kindness even when they opposed him.

- Prophet Nuh (Noah) – Prophet Nuh demonstrated remarkable patience and steadfastness by calling his people to Allah for 950 years, tirelessly working day and night, a true example of Ihsan in enduring difficulty for the sake of guiding others.

- Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) – Prophet Ibrahim’s acts of Ihsan were evident when he gently corrected his father’s idol-worship, destroyed the idols in his community to demonstrate the falseness of their beliefs, and was willing to sacrifice his son Ismail, all for the love and obedience to Allah.

- Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) – Prophet Yusuf showed Ihsan in his dealings with his brothers who wronged him. Despite their betrayal, he forgave them and provided for them during their time of need.

Muhsin vs. Mukmin

A Muhsin is always a Mukmin (believer), but not every Mukmin is necessarily a Muhsin. A Muhsin goes beyond basic faith and worship, embodying excellence in their actions and conduct, all for the sake of Allah.

Adab Towards Parents

• We discussed Surah Maryam, verse 41, where Prophet Ibrahim speaks to his father. Despite his father being a disbeliever and an idol worshiper, Ibrahim showed utmost respect and gentleness. This teaches us the importance of maintaining good manners towards our parents, regardless of their beliefs or actions.

• The verse serves as a reminder to be humble, polite, and patient when dealing with our parents, even in difficult situations.

  
  

Adab Towards Neighbours

• A hadith from Rasulullah ﷺ emphasizes the importance of treating neighbors with kindness and respect. It is reported that he said, “Jibril kept advising me to treat the neighbor well until I thought he would make him one of my heirs,” which means we should care for our neighbors almost as if they were family.

• Another hadith narrated by Aishah (RA) talks about when she had two things to give away, and she asked Rasulullah ﷺ to whom she should give them. He advised her to give to the neighbor who is closest to her. This teaches us that proximity matters in our acts of kindness and charity.

  
  

Adab as a Student

• As students, we should uphold proper adab in our pursuit of knowledge. This includes being respectful towards teachers, arriving on time, being diligent in our studies, and seeking knowledge with sincerity.

• A student should have humility, acknowledging that learning is a lifelong process and that knowledge comes from Allah.

Difference Between Adab and Akhlaq

• Adab refers to manners, etiquette, or the proper way of behaving in specific situations. It is the external manifestation of good behavior, such as how you interact with parents, neighbors, teachers, etc. It focuses on the appropriateness of actions in a social context.

• Akhlaq, on the other hand, refers to one’s character and inner disposition. It is broader and reflects the moral compass that guides a person's behavior in every aspect of life. While adab is about specific actions and situational behavior, akhlaq is about a person’s consistent moral and ethical integrity.

  
  

IBADAH

Hikmah: wisdom ‚ Ibadah: worship

1. Set a right intention (niyyah) niyyah

• With the right attention‚ we'll get rewards too

• E.g.: Learn for the sake of Allah not just for worldly materials.

2. Right 'Amal (Practices)..jaga kesihatan kerana Allah utk beribadah

• Do Allah's obligatories with sincerity by following the Quran and Sunnah.

• Eg:

• Perform Salah according to ways and condition stated in Quran and Sunnah.

• Removing harmful objects from the road is considered an act of charity and a good deed according to hadith.

3. Internalising Ihsan

• Feel the presence of Allah SWT Who sees you when you stand (praying) and go back and forth in prostration. When a servant worships, Allah SWT is truly in front of him, so he must be able to feel/see His presence or at least he must know that Allah SWT is watching him.

• (Bersungguh2 dlm melakukan ibadah kerana percaya Allah sentiasa mengawasi kita)

ٱلَّذِى يَرَىٰكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ ٢١٨

Who (Allah) sees you when you rise ˹for prayer at night˺,

وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِى ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ ٢١٩

as well as your movements ˹in prayer˺ along with ˹fellow˺ worshippers.

Solat - Among first thing will be asked in yaumul qiamah

• Abu Hurairah R.A bahawa Rasulullah SAW bersabda:

  • أَوَّلُ مَا يُحَاسَبُ بِهِ الْعَبْدُ صَلاَتُهُ

“Perkarapertama yang akan seseorang hamba itu dihitung (pada Hari Kiamat) adalah mengenai solatnya.”

• Syeikh Muhammad bin Soleh al-‘Uthaimin :

  • perkara pertama yang akan dihisab oleh seorang hamba di antara amalannya pada hari kiamat adalah solat,

    dan ini berkaitan dengan hak Allah SWT.

  • Jika baik solatnya, maka dia telah berjaya.

  • Jika tidak baik solatnya, maka dia telah gagal dan sia-sia amalannya

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ . الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ.

• calmness, humility, fear & humbleness

• state of heart characterized by humility, submission and attentiveness to Allah during acts of worship, particularly in solat (prayer)

understand the meaning of the ayat:

أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ الْقُرْآنَ أَمْ عَلَى قُلُوبٍ أَقْفَالُهَا

Maksudnya: “(Setelah diterangkan yang demikian) maka adakah mereka sengaja tidak berusaha memahami serta memikirkan isi Al-Quran? Atau telah ada di atas hati mereka kunci penutup (yang menghalangnya daripada menerima ajaran Al-Quran)?”

• Slow down and avoid rushing.

• Reflect on the significance of each action.

• Make dua for khusyu'.

• Strengthens connection with Allah.

• Promotes inner peace and reduces stress.

• Rewards in the Hereafter: Acceptance of prayers and closeness to Allah.

“Sesungguhnya banyaknya was-was kerana banyaknya syubhat dan syahwat, dan keterikatan hati terhadap perkara-perkara yang dicintainya, yang menuntutnya supaya mencarinya, serta perkara-perkara yang dibenci, yang hati terdorong untuk menolaknya.” (Lihat Majmu al-Fatawa: 22/607).

• Practiced by past nations, including Jews, Christians, Hindus, and Buddhists.

• Made obligatory for Muslims in the second year of Hijrah (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183).

• Aimed at developing taqwa (piety).

2. Wisdom of Fasting

• Controls desires and purifies the soul.

• Prevents sinful acts like lying, gossiping, and anger.

• Strengthens self-discipline and devotion to Allah.

3. Exemptions and Ease in Fasting

• Sick or traveling individuals can make up for missed fasts later.

• Those with chronic illnesses may pay fidyah (feeding the poor).

• Flexibility in fasting laws reflects Allah’s mercy (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185).

4. Significance of Ramadan

• The month when the Quran was revealed.

• Other scriptures (Torah, Gospel) were also sent down in Ramadan.

• A time of heightened spirituality, worship, and self-control.

5. Key Virtues of Fasting

• Patience (Sabr) – Strengthens self-control, endurance, and reliance on Allah.

• Honor (Takrim) – Elevates status through obedience, self-discipline, and seeking Allah’s pleasure.

• Mercy (Rahmah) – Cultivates gratitude, empathy for the needy, and increased acts of charity (sadaqah).

6. Charity and Forgiveness

• Encourages generosity, especially in Ramadan (sadaqah, zakat).

• Strengthens community bonds through kindness and forgiveness.

7. Conclusion

Fasting is a means of spiritual purification, self-discipline, and devotion. It enhances patience, honor, and mercy, ultimately bringing one closer to Allah.

• Definition: It means growth, increase, cleanliness, and betterment. It is a specified share of wealth to be given to eligible recipients, differing from taxation as it also serves spiritual purification.

• Zakāh vs Sadaqah: Zakāh is obligatory, structured, and has specific recipients, while Sadaqah is voluntary and flexible.

• Significance: Mentioned over 30 times in the Quran, highlighting its role in purifying wealth and increasing blessings.

• Virtues:

  • Tawakkul (Reliance on Allah): Teaches Muslims to trust Allah rather than material wealth.

  • Ukhuwwah (Brotherhood): Promotes love, unity, and removes envy and hatred within society.

• Bridging Relationships: Strengthens both the vertical relationship with Allah and the horizontal relationship with people.

Alhamdulillah, these past seven weeks have been a meaningful journey of learning and reflection. Discussions on hikmah in ibadah deepened my understanding of Islam and encouraged self-improvement. Usrah also strengthened the bond of sisterhood, reminding me of the importance of shared growth in faith.

I hope to apply these lessons in daily life, engage more actively, and strengthen my connection with the Quran and Hadith. May Allah guide us all to become better Muslims and grant us istiqamah in seeking knowledge. Ameen.
