This shows that I have a strong association European with American and Asian with Foreign. This is actually very surprising to me because I am Asian American. However, I can understand why I associate like that. The typical media that you see within America is predominantly Caucasian. Very few movies and tv shows have an Asian cast outside of Asian media. When I think of America, I think of people that look nothing like me. When I think of my own culture, I think about Vietnam. Even though I am Asian American, I still see myself as different from the rest of America. This is sad to see that I have a bias against my own race and the country I live in, but that is due to the media of our generation. With the rise of movies staring an all Asian cast, I hope Asian Americans of the new generation can feel like they are more represented within America.

In this bias test I associated more with straight people compared to gay people. This makes sense to me because I am straight myself. However, this is very good to know because I do support the LGBTQ+ community. Many of my friends and clients are gay or queer and I need to be aware of my own biases when dealing with them. A lot of this I feel like has to do with my own culture and the way I was raised. In Vietnam, being gay or queer is not greatly accepted. In this new generation a movement is being made, but it is very slow and small compared to America. My mom is also someone that looks down on gay people because of how she was raised and that was something that I noticed when I was younger. As I got older, I became more accepting of other people's sexuality and their movement. However, because of this test, I now know that I still have more work to do until I can remove all bias with other sexualities.

I believe all students, no matter their race, ethnicity, sex, gender, families’ economic class, etc. deserve to be treated fairly. Every student should have an opportunity to learn and achieve their goals. Category 1: Mindset Standards: M1 states that counselors should encourage all students to have a sense of belonging in the school environment (ASCA, 2019). This becomes hard when students feel like they are different or outcasts. I myself as an Asian American student attending a prominently Caucasian school have felt this uncomfortability many times. At times I would feel like the only person in the whole school that understood my culture and ethnicity. As a counselor, we must look at our own backgrounds and biases to be able to remove our views when dealing with a student and their uniqueness. Also Category 1: Mindset Standards: M2 stating that counselors should encourage their students to feel self-confidence in their ability to succeed is so very important in making sure that every student has an equal opportunity to succeed (ASCA, 2019) Not every student will have the same dreams or goals after high school, but they all have something they want to achieve, and it is the counselor’s duty to help them acknowledge their own ability to achieve their goals.

All students deserve respect, empathy, and support no matter who they are or where they have come from. To be able to protect and guide these students, a counselor must always treat every student that comes to them fairly without bias. Each student should have the opportunity to achieve their academic, social, and future goals.
