Ordinances received in the temple have been given by revelation and so should be received and understood by revelation.

Discernment will be given to all who assist in any way to prepare people to visit the Lord’s house before and after dedication.

Do not be in a rush.

This service should not be considered as or feel “commonplace”. It is a sacred consecrated service.

Set an example.  Compliment those who come to see the temple. Be approachable. Be kind, smile, and be tactful.

Look for miracles that will come as you participate in this service. Be a witness of those miracles.

We go where we are welcomed – we stay where we are loved.

Feelings they (ushers and visitors) have of order, peace and love will prompt them to return to the temple.

Focus on the needs of people who make the effort to come to the open house.

Reflect the Savior’s light. (How would the Savior greet and treat them?)

Service is an outward expression of love.

You will know your service was successful if people remember the feelings they had

and not just you.

Look to elevate people.

Thank you for serving as volunteers. You did wonderfully well. The Cody Temple Open House was a success because of your willingness, your faith, and your love.

The shout is a symbol of how the crowds reacted to Jesus during his triumphal entry into Jerusalem during the last week of His life. “Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest,” the New Testament record says.

Hosanna comes from two Hebrew words that, as used in Psalms 118:25, are rendered in the King James Version as “Save [us] now, I beseech thee.” In the Mosaic law, a priest recited this psalm each day during the seven-day Feast of Tabernacles, when the people were commanded to “rejoice before the Lord” (Leviticus 23:40). The Feast of Tabernacles was a time of exultation for the ancient Israelites. Thus, the Hosanna, though supplicatory at first, became associated with rejoicing. This is also its meaning in the New Testament, the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants. In these texts, hosanna is a recognition of and praise for the goodness of God and the saving power of Jesus Christ.

The history of the use of “hosanna” in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints goes back to before the Church was formally organized in 1830. In an 1829 revelation, Martin Harris was commanded to “preach, exhort, declare the truth, even with a loud voice, with a sound of rejoicing, crying—Hosanna, hosanna, blessed be the name of the Lord God!” Similar commandments were given to individuals in 1830 and 1831.

The Hosanna Shout became a collective membership experience at the 1836 dedication of the Church’s Kirtland Temple. Near the conclusion of the dedicatory services, the congregation joined in shouting three times: “Hosanna! Hosanna! Hosanna to God and the Lamb, Amen, Amen and Amen!” Historically, other events throughout the history of the Church have been graced with the Hosanna Shout.

Since the 1892 capstone ceremony of the Salt Lake Temple, the Hosanna Shout has been done while waving a white handkerchief.

Prior to his assignment as the Commissioner of Education, Elder Gilbert was the inaugural president of BYU–Pathway Worldwide. He also served previously as the president of Brigham Young University–Idaho.

Elder Gilbert received a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University, a master’s degree from Stanford University, and a doctorate from Harvard University. He worked as a professor of entrepreneurial management at Harvard University. He was later the chief executive officer of the Deseret News and Deseret Digital Media.

Clark Gordon Gilbert was born in Oakland, California, on June 18, 1970. He served as a full-time missionary in the Japan Kobe Mission. He married Christine Calder in 1994. They are the parents of eight children.
