John was committed to absolutes when he wrote the epistles (1 to 3 John) addressing some fundamental Christian understanding. He used direct opposites like light and darkness as well as children of God and the children of the devil, as seen in 1 John. 1 John to 3 John differs in the focus of the people (from a whole church to families within a church to individuals within a church) but share the similarity of stressing on loyalty to the truth (Grace to You, 2013). John confronts the shallowness and the lack of conviction among the people of his day (John: the Apostle of Love ,2002). He was an exclusive preacher who was much needed in a very inclusive time. John was establishing a solid foundation of truth for the church in order to tackle false teachings that were very imminent during his ministry. He was battling with seeds of compromise within the church.

In proclaiming the truth, John did it with a tenderness and a love of a pastor as well as shepherd. This love, however, is not the kind of love that is sentimental or "tolerance masquerading" (MacArthur, 2002). It was completely without tolerance of sin of any kind. Having all truth without love is said to be total brutality. John knew and preached the truth but he upheld it with love. John loved the people under his ministry in truth. In 2 John 1:1, John set this tone by describing the "chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth..."
