In Islam, intention (Arabic: niyyah) refers to the inner resolve or purpose behind an action. It is a fundamental concept because in Islam, actions are not only judged by their outward appearance but also by the intention behind them.

An intention can transform a simple action into an act of worship if done with the right purpose. For example:-

WORSHIP : A prayer (Salah) is not accepted if one's intention is to show off, but if the intention is to please Allah, the act becomes an act of devotion.

SEEKING KNOWLEDGE : For the sake of Allah: If the intention behind seeking knowledge is to please Allah, to benefit others, and to contribute positively to the Muslim community, the act of learning becomes a form of worship. This includes knowledge that can improve one's faith (like learning about the Quran, Hadith)

To gain prestige or worldly benefit: If the intention behind seeking knowledge is to show off, gain status, or simply for personal gain, then the act loses its spiritual value and may not be rewarded by Allah.

DAILY TASKS : Even mundane activities like working or eating can become acts of worship if done with the intention of fulfilling responsibilities and seeking
Allah's blessings.

Islam – Must be a Muslim.

2. Tamyiz (ability to understand) – Usually age 7 and above.

3. Clean water (ṭahūr) – Pure and permissible water must be used.

4. No barriers on skin – Such as paint, nail polish, heavy makeup, etc.

5. Intention (niyyah) – Intend in the heart to perform wudu.

6. Follow the correct order (tartib) – As prescribed in the Qur’an.

7. Continuous sequence (muwalat) – No long breaks between steps.

8. Water must reach the necessary parts fully.

SUNNAH AFTER WUDU

1. Reciting the Shahadah

• Prophet (SAW) said:

“Whoever performs wudu and says: ‘Ashhadu alla ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluh’, the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him.”

(Sahih Muslim 234)

2. Praying 2 rak‘ah (wudu prayer)

• As in the hadith of Bilal (RA), the Prophet praised him for always praying after wudu.

3. Drying hands/face with a towel – Permissible but not necessary.

4. Using miswak before wudu – Though this is sunnah before starting wudu, it complements the act.

COMMON PROBLEMS OR MISTAKES IN WUDU

1. Water not reaching certain areas

• Especially between fingers, elbows, or heels.

2. Wiping only part of the head

• It must be at least one-fourth, though wiping the whole head is better.

3. Skipping order

• Wudu must be done in sequence: face → arms → wipe head → feet.

4. Long breaks between parts

• Waiting too long between steps without a valid reason can invalidate it.

5. Doing wudu with impure water or water with najis in it.
