Most students are familiar with decorative refractive crystals so these could be used as a starting point to engage students. I also like the idea of setting up an optical illusion with light (as per the reading) and trying to get students to explain and then explore what is happening. Many of my students like puzzles and so I think they would find this engaging.

It's quite a common one, but using the slinky to model waves can be quite good for developing understanding. Students can investigate different types of waves and try to change the speed of the waves of the slinky.
