Today we set up our process blogs. Over the last few weeks I have been exploring areas of nutrition and health all around the world. I've particularly been interested in the concept of a 'western diet' and how globalisation affects the food industry and how people obtain and consume their food products. It's also interesting to track the different patterns in the food industry when linked with historical events. The recent prevalence of sustainable eaters and growers as well as the increase of dietary lifestyles such as veganism are another aspect that I have been researching and have interesting ideas and philosophies.

Possible Questions

Over the last few weeks I have been thinking about possible questions to explore for my GIP topic. These are some that I have come up with so far:

How does globalisation influence
rates of poor nutrition in developing countries?

Is humanity afraid of the wrong issues? Are we too concerned with things such as murder and not effective nutrition?

What are the impacts of poor
nutrition in countries across the world?

In what ways does poor nutrition
affect the health of not only an individual but a community?

Explain the causes of poor nutrition,
both in cases of obesity and malnutrition

Evaluate the impact of companies such
as coke and mcdonalds on the nutrition and health of people around the world

Analyse the importance of food
promotion in the three central areas (home, school, main street)

Explore the impact of food
advertising on children and how this influences their food choices

Hi Belinda, I really like some of the questions you have brainstormed below. In particular the following questions could make for a very good GIP:

1. To what extend has globalization influenced rates of poor nutrition in developing countries?

2. Evaluate the impact and responsibility of TNC's such as McDonalds and Coke on the health of the global population?

Some of your other questions are also interesting but remember you need to really keep your question global and important to a variety of communities around the world.

Where to next? - continue researching your general topic area and collect information in a systematic way. In the next 2 weeks you need to finalise what your GIP question will be so you can begin working on the final project.

Mrs Newman

In the holidays, I took into account the comments that Mrs Newman had made in regards to my possible questions. I have decided to research and explore the following question:

Evaluate the impact and responsibility of TNC's such as McDonalds and Coke on the health of the global population?

This interests me as I would like to look into issues surrounding nutrition and the impact and responsibility that companies such as Coke and McDonalds have in regards to providing nutritious and environmentally sustainable products. I also want to look into different countries and how food companies have impacted them, both positively and negatively. I think it will be interesting to see certain recurring patterns with populations all over the world from the developed and developing worlds.

In the holidays, I continued my research into countries such as China, Mexico and Brazil and the impact of TNC's especially Coke and McDonald's. I then decided to investigate Nestle as they have many advertising campaigns in developing countries such as The Philippines and Bangladesh. I have learnt a lot of interesting things about Nestle in particular including their unethical marketing strategies and exploitation of mothers of newborn babies. I found this very interesting and will keep these practices in mind in the future. I plan on presenting either a report or an essay.

For my final presentation of my GIP, I have chosen to create a children's book. This book will feature the stories of two children from Bangladesh and Mexico, and will include a QR code for readers that links to my website for further information. The book contains sections about the children's home, hobbies, food, family and more. I changed to this from an essay or report as I felt it was more interesting and engaging for the reader. It was also fun to make and I could choose which aspects to include. For future projects, I would definitely consider incorporating this format.
