Example of interactive art

Taylor Swift’s stage performance, in which she theatrically “dives” into the stage and appears to swim across a floor screen projection, exemplifies principles central to interaction art. While situated within the context of a popular music concert, this moment demonstrates how technology can transform performance into an immersive, hybrid experience that blurs the boundary between the physical and the digital.

The sequence functions through the synchronization of live bodily action (the dive) with technologically mediated imagery (the animated underwater visuals). In this sense, the stage becomes a responsive environment, recalling the logic of interaction art, in which a system reacts dynamically to human movement or presence. Although the audience does not directly manipulate the visuals, their perceptual and affective engagement completes the work: the illusion of immersion is contingent upon their willingness to accept the interplay of real and virtual space.

From an artistic perspective, this moment aligns with the trajectory of interaction art by foregrounding the co-existence of performer, technology, and audience. The performer’s movement “activates” the digital stage, while the audience’s collective response gives the illusion its cultural and experiential meaning. Thus, the concert sequence can be interpreted as an application of interaction art principles within mainstream entertainment, demonstrating how interactive aesthetics extend beyond gallery contexts into large-scale, popular cultural productions.

What is design interaction & interactive art?

On the first week, we learned the basic information about the design interaction. Interaction design is basically the process of designing the dialogue between users and digital products, systems, or services, focusing on making these interaction intuitive, engaging, and satisfying. Base from that we are more focusing on the interactive art. At first, I thought it is the same meaning and same area. However, the usage of this word is totally different.

So what is interactive art?

Interaction art is a form of contemporary art where the audience’s participation is essential for the artwork to exist or be complete. Unlike traditional art that you just look at, interaction art invites you to touch, move, speak, walk through, or digitally engage with it.

There are some 5 design core characterisitcs.

Participation is Required

The audience isn’t passive — they activate the work through movement, voice, or decisions.

Dynamic & Responsive

The artwork changes in real time depending on the participant’s actions.

Technology as Medium

Often uses sensors, cameras, software, VR/AR, projections, sound systems, robotics.

Co-Creation

The audience becomes a co-author of the piece, not just a viewer.

Focus on Experience

The meaning of the artwork lies in the process of interaction, not just the object itself.

During the first class, we did the research about the Singapore. The work will be hang up on the Changi Airport Lounge, so we need to make the work that represents Singapore. So in the Miro board, we just did the research and place the photos that comes up form our mind.

After having individual time, we presented our ideas about the research that we did.

I am the person who is curious of the daily life in other country. Thus, first, the 2nd-floors bus and mrt came to my mind, and then I started to think of the streets.

I tried to think of the things that I see on the street on the way to bus and mrt station.

I thought of the interesting living things that I could not see in my home country.

Thus, I found some pictures of the animals that were unique in Singapore. The animals are Oriental Pied Hornbill, Slender Squirrel, Javan Myna, chicken, and etc.

Base on my research, Kapilan gave some more photos of fruits and flowers. Thus, he gave me a help to think more wide that I could not know and think about.

Though the research, I could came up with the brief ideas of my work.

What “ambient” should feel like in a lounge?

1. Atmosphere of Calm and Comfort

The ambient quality in a lounge should create a sense of calmness and relaxation, reducing the stress and fatigue of travel.

Visuals, sound, and interaction should remain subtle rather than overwhelming.

2. Background, Not Distraction

Ambient design does not dominate attention but supports the overall atmosphere.

Digital interactions should feel natural and harmonious, blending into the environment instead of demanding constant focus.

3. Connection to Place

In the context of Singapore, the ambient feel could draw on local elements — gentle natural imagery (water, greenery, tropical light) or cultural motifs — to provide a sense of belonging and identity.

4. Temporal Sensitivity

Since travelers use lounges at different times (day/night, short stay/long wait), the ambience should feel adaptive: soft lighting tones, shifting visuals, or responsive soundscapes that subtly change with time of day.

Therefore, the ambient in the lounge should feel like a soft, living background: visually calm, gently responsive to presence, locally inspired, and adaptive over time. The interaction should be minimal and non-intrusive, offering travelers comfort, subtle engagement, and a sense of place during transition.

Animals may wear floral crowns, flowers may float like balloons, and hybrid creatures could emerge. The overall feeling is whimsical, colorful, and slightly surreal—inviting viewers to step into a childlike wonderland where the ordinary becomes extraordinary.

Another idea was to incorporate elements like old post seals—objects once passed through human hands—which can evoke a nostalgic, historical feeling. Lastly, I explored the atmosphere of old fairy tales, where animals run and play in warm, inviting scenes. This fairy-tale quality helps convey a cultural and timeless sensibility.

In the Playful & Energetic concept, the contrast between ambient and active behaviors became even clearer. In the ambient mode, animals moved naturally within their own habitats, while flowers on the floor or birds on the wall reacted only subtly to human presence. This created a soft, playful background mood. In the active mode, however, the animals and flowers took on more dramatic actions—birds flying away when approached, flowers falling from above, or animals appearing and disappearing in more noticeable ways. The imposed limitation made me recognize that playfulness can be expressed quietly through environmental gestures or more boldly through direct interactivity. By distinguishing between the two, I could see how the same playful theme shifts from being immersive and atmospheric to being engaging and participatory.

When working with the Cultural concept, imposing the distinction between ambient and active behaviors made me notice how cultural references can shift in meaning depending on their expression. In the ambient side, I used floral motifs inspired by traditional patterns, arranged into modular, repetitive forms. Their behavior was subtle, more like background rhythms, which emphasized cultural identity without demanding much attention. On the active side, however, animals like lions or birds became more animated, jumping across frames or appearing in interaction with national flowers. This made the cultural references more playful and participatory. The limitation between passive and active therefore highlighted how cultural motifs could either be contemplative and atmospheric or vivid and engaging, depending on the mode.

In the Food Culture concept, imposing the distinction between ambient and active behaviors helped me see how food could be expressed both as a calm cultural symbol and as a lively interactive element. In the ambient mode, traditional sweets and layered cakes move smoothly, shifting places with one another in a rhythmic way. This subtle motion conveys harmony, continuity, and the cultural richness of food without overwhelming the viewer. In the active mode, however, the food takes on a far more playful and energetic character. Items split in half, fly around the person, or scatter dynamically in space, almost like a performance. By setting this limitation, I realized that food culture can be represented as both a gentle, atmospheric presence and a bold, participatory experience. This contrast emphasized how cultural elements can transform depending on whether they are ambient or interactive.

Prompt: Reflect on your developments and live prototyping tests today. Think about what aspects of your project has to change or adapt based on the updated specs. Document your group's progress and idea's evolution.

Base on the feedback, we need to make the steps more simpler and focused on the geometric shape. Thus, we were discussing ideas that how are we going to make the transformation of geometric shapes. We came up with many different ideas like dividing screen in to square shape and fill the space with flower like tile or making floating circle shape and make that a flower. In conclusion, we decide to do with the bubbles to flowers.

Foreground:

Floating circle shapes ( bubbles) all over the screen, responding to user interaction.

Midground:

Floating bubbles become smaller, and the small center of the flowers keep on floats around and ready for the flowers leaves to come up.

Background:

From the center of the circle shape of the flower stamen, the leaves come out and become the flower.

When one person just comes to see, flowers will change one by one. But if many people come at the same time, flowers will change all together almost in same time.

Second discussion was about the size of flowers and bubbles. Base on the size how big it will be. Thus, we made the artboard on the illustration and checked the sizes.

Through the Design Interaction class, I was able to think beyond creating flat works and begin imagining projects that truly communicate and interact with people. It became a meaningful starting point for me. I am also learning coding on my own, and this class made me want to combine different skills and technologies to create a wider range of works in the future.

And through the work we created, I hope that people in the lounge can feel as if they are blossoming into a new version of themselves as they encounter a fresh environment. I want the lounge to be a space where such anticipation begins. Just like my dreamlike soap bubbles drifting without a fixed form eventually bloom into flowers, I hope that each traveler’s journey will unfold step by step in the same hopeful way.
