School Counselor Competency Assessment

Hello Everyone,

After reviewing the assessment, I am confident in my results. There are areas I need improvement on for sure! But overall, I am satisfied with my outcome. Working as a Clinic and Mental Health Services Case Manager, I have already put most of this to the test. I see young women daily who need help with school, resumes, and other resources.

The places where I excelled were Mind Sets and Behaviors (Professional Foundations). I did so well with the mindset portion because I already practice "mindset" in interacting with others. Whether it is personally or professionally. In our last discussion, for my core beliefs, I put that every student can learn and every student can succeed. I also put that every student should have access to quality education (American School Counseling Association, 2019). The scores aligned with my core beliefs. Behaviors (Professional Foundations) also align perfectly with my core beliefs and my plans on how I want to counsel. This part of the assessment mainly discovers what counseling is, why it is essential, and how the process should look when implemented. I feel my scores reflected my core beliefs and my strategy.

I need to improve Behaviors (direct and indirect student services). In this area, I didn't score the best due to my lack of knowledge for this specific part of the assessment. I will have to work on how I discipline and figure out methods that work for each student. As a counselor, you can't apply one approach to every student—the creation of curriculums and classroom lessons that work for students. Again, trying to find a universal lesson every student can take away can be difficult. I also have to remember that I can only save some of them. This is another reason I scored pretty low; I can't save them all; HAHA! In this area, I am good at providing help with college admissions and being knowledgeable about different tests like the ASVAB or NCLEX. So, I am confident I can deliver those kinds of direct/indirect services. But I will need to boost my skills in creating lessons and implementing discipline/approaches unique to students.

What surprised me was not knowing much about lesson creation and also that school counselors create lesson plans. I guess I never thought that deeply about school counseling and assumed it was much like counseling but just in a school setting. But now, really thinking about it, it all makes sense. Lesson plans are an essential aspect of school counseling so that the students don't feel overwhelmed and like they are being subjected to "therapy."

References:

ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors - American School Counselor Association (ASCA).
