What he gave to Chat GPT: Create a Civics lesson for a high school classroom, 75 minutes in length, about the creation of the constitution. The lesson should have an attention grabbing opening, direct instruction that presents facts, and creates opportunities for students to interact and discuss big ideas with each other.
 
What Chat GPT Gave him:

Lesson Title: The Creation of the Constitution

Opening:

  • Begin by showing a clip from the movie "Hamilton," specifically the song "The Battle of Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)."
  • Ask the students what they think the song is about and what they think it has to do with the creation of the Constitution.
Direct Instruction:

  • Provide background information on the Articles of Confederation and explain how they were inadequate in terms of creating a strong central government.
  • Discuss the reasons for the calling of the Constitutional Convention and the main issues that were addressed during the convention.
  • Present information on the key figures at the convention, including James Madison, George Washington, and Alexander Hamilton.
  • Discuss the compromises that resulted in the Great Compromise and the Three-Fifths Compromise.
  • Explain the process of ratification and the role of the Federalists and Anti-Federalists in the process.
Interactive Activities:

  • Divide the class into small groups and assign each group one of the key figures from the convention. Have each group research the figure and create a presentation to the class on the person's role and contributions to the Constitution.
  • Assign a group of students to be Federalists and another group to be Anti-Federalists. Have the groups debate the merits of ratifying the Constitution.
  • Have the class read and discuss the Bill of Rights, and have students identify which rights they think are most important and why.
Closure:

  • Review the main points of the lesson and ask the students to brainstorm ways in which the Constitution still impacts their lives today.
  • End the lesson by playing the clip from "Hamilton" again, and ask the students to reflect on how the song relates to the events discussed in class.

It helped me to stop, take a step back, and reflect. The most powerful section for me was her discussion of babies and toddlers. Children. I stayed home with 4 kids for 10 years, mid-career. Interesting reflection point for me. She does a good job discussing the world around us and giving pause.

It's a well-written and insightful starting point to this conversation, which is part of the problem here.  I ask: where do we start and what's our reference point?  For me, I was part of the original 1:1 program in D20 and hired to help integrate and support iPads at PCHS. My perspectives are different than many others. I live and breathe tech, I spend most of my hours in IT PD, and teach it everyday to high schoolers.

This book has helped me to pull back and take a hard look at digital technologies, from the perspective of an expert in "Cyberpsychology" and cyber forensics.
