UX Design Activity - Positive Mobile Learning Experiences by Melissa Lavoie

Please use this Padlet to post a positive experience you have had when participating in mobile learning experiences. Describe some of the design elements of the app and/or online platform that stood out to you as making your learning experience easier and more engaging (example: font choice, navigation elements, obvious mobile responsiveness, etc). This could also include what browser you would typically use to access the mobile learning resource on your device.

Something that's helped me learn more about my chronic migraines is the app Migraine Buddy. The app makes it very easy to keep track of migraine triggers, intensity, and medication. One reason it's so easy is that as soon as you record a new migraine, the app will walk you through the information to record and provide examples to select, step-by-step, and auto-advance the screen as you move through it. When your finish recording, it shows your a summary of what you answered, and your (pictured below) and you can click on any section to edit it or add more information. It also tracks sleep, and you can view via calender or list all your recorded migraines, triggers, sleep schedule etc. any time. Lastly, the experience is sensitive to its users; you can begin to record a migraine and stop any time. A notification will sit in your notification bar even if you close the app, letting you edit your running migraine at any time, al you don't feel compelled to work through self-analysis while dealing with the migraine. Recent updates have also made it easy to add additional information, like time-stamped pain intensity changes, blood pressure, when need are taken, etc. Thanks to this app, I've been able to better understand and track my attacks, and have something credible to present to my doctor when addressing a medical concern that often gets dismissed as "just a headache."

An app that I really love is my CIBC banking app.. everything about it is intuitive and useful. The creators found a good balance of aesthetically pleasing & functionality. The step by step process to transfer money/pay bills/ e transfer/ deposit cheques makes it very useful but doesn't simplify banking too much that it feels unsafe/untrustworthy!

Living abroad I must say that I love the Pizza Hut Mongolia app! I had to register once with my address (which I was able to pick on a map) and now I can order pizza whenever I want in English and they know where to deliver it! This is certainly not the case when I try to call other places so I have given up and only use them now! Oh, and I guess I should mention that the app is very user friendly and has all of the menu items organized by pizza, sides, drinks, and deals - making it really simple to find what I want.

I'm currently using the NY Times crossword app and have really enjoyed the experience so far. The app allows me to try completing crossword puzzles while on the bus or in line. The interface is simple and the app contains puzzles of different sizes so I can choose an appropriately sized puzzle for the amount of time I have to spend on it - between 1 minute to more than several hours! The puzzles are easy to read and doesn't appear to be cluttered. Navigation is simple - I can either click into the puzzle or use arrows to move between clues. Additionally, I can download puzzle packages for when I don't have internet access. The premium package costs money but users are granted a free 7 day subscription when downloading the app for the first time! - Christopher Wong

Now I guess I'll contribute a learning app as well! I have really been enjoying PressReader this year as my school has a subscription and I can access newspapers and magazines from around the world. Various classes use it to read the local English paper here - The UB Post, analyzing the writing and finding mistakes with language and grammar, as many of the writers are not native English speakers. The app itself is simple, intuitive and looks good. The publications are sorted by category, country, language and type, and the search feature is quick if you know the title or some of the words in the title you are looking for. Publications are downloaded to your device so you can easily enjoy reading while off-line. - Scott

I don't have a lot of experience exclusively learning on mobile devices. I think the reason for that is because I haven't had a lot of well-designed opportunities. To be honest most the time it feels clunky (like using padlet on a mobile browser). One of the most common ones I have used both this semester and previous MET courses has been flipgrid. You don't need to take a tutorial or read a whole bunch of steps to figure out how to make a post and interact with others. I think if anyone is going to attempt to use mobile devices for educational purposes they have to keep it simple and it has to work cross-platform or else you limit your audience and your engagement.

I've enjoyed reading everyone's posts that describe their user experiences with mobile apps. Words that keep coming up are 'intuitive', 'simple navigation', 'easy to learn', 'looks good'. In may ways I wonder if we like apps that don't seem to get in the way of our learning/use. One example in my experience is Running apps. A number of years ago I started using Nike Run Club. Early iterations of the app met the criteria listed above, but subsequent iterations diminished my user experience and use aims. I liked the original version because I could easily set a run time/length, track my runs in a log and view pacing graphics. Over time the developers added 'features' that I felt started to clutter the app. for instance, when starting the app, I had to view an ad, then log in with a club account...The app wanted to connect all my other messenger apps together: facebook, instagram. The purity of purpose of the app, for me, started to get lost. Consequently, I stopped using it!

Weight Watchers has a great app. The program is based on equating food with a points value. The average member gets 23 points per day. The app has a barcode scanner to use at the grocery store to instantly know how many points foods are (fruit, veggies, chicken, fish and eggs are 0 pioint foods). The bar code scanner has been a game changer in how members are learning about their food choices. The app is immensely popular for the very reason that is user friendly. It is easy to navigate and has a simple, intuitive design. All the input I need for my own personal goals is at the top with a clear display. It highlights my daily food input, but also has the week there as well which lets me know how my week is going. Weekly recipes are below aligned in a horizontal scroll and this is followed by a community blog called connect where you can ask questions, reach out for support or ask for advice. Another navigation bar at the bottom takes me to more information within the app. The other thing I like about it is that wiht two thumb swipes you can go from the top of the page to the bottom. If I have to do too much scrolling in an app, I tend to not use it. Maybe it’s my age (49!), but I like to be able to see most of the page and not have to go back and forth.

I still avoid writing assignments or long discussion posts there, but use it frequently to find class announcements, due dates, and readings.
