Although there were many arguments in defense of slavery, they are not the most valid. The most valid argument is the one against slavery because it can be proven that it is more in line with the United States' founding principles and it is more morally sound.

Document 4- Walker

The passage from David Walker says that the colored people in the U. S. were treated the most brutally since the world arose. In fact, the Americans who detained those in slavery who call themselves "Christians", or pretend to be, treated the colored people more brutal and inhuman than any other nation could ever imagine. This document is written from the perspective of a colored man. His argument is very applicable because he is personally experiencing the cruel consequences of being a colored man in America during the time in which this was written. This shows how slave masters treated their slaves for this cruelty to be embedded in their heads. Which is not fair especially for the fact of how America is supposed to be viewed as a free country. Therefore, Walker's perspective shows that it should have been a duty for people to stop the brutality of the state of racial differences, and to show that the act of slavery was immoral. The white people were enforcing their cruel "Christian" ways upon colored people, therefore holding them in slavery against their own will, and not giving them the equal rights as American citizens.

Doc.2 - Calhoun

In 1838, John C. Calhoun, a Senator and slave owner from South Carolina delivered a speech. It stated that the slaves and southern whites “secured peace and happiness of both” also stating that slaves would not have been able to become “civilized” without the influence of their white slave owners. However, this “civilization” Calhoun talks about is one based off of violence and oppression, and, blacks did have a civilization before whites came, because many blacks that were slaves during the time of the civil war were descended from people who were forcefully taken away from their tribes and communities, proving that blacks could (and did) function without whites, thus, making the argument that whites “improved” black society, invalid. This proves that slavery is invalid because their rights were taken away from them. Calhoun wants to convince abolitionists that the relationship between slave owners and slave is a mutual relationship between them ,by convincing abolitionist then he can protect the slavery in his state and therefore will be able to maintain his slaves.

Doc. 1- Garrison

In William Lloyd Garrison's excerpt from his famous newspaper, The Liberator, he says that emancipation should be viewed by the whole nation as a chance for liberty and equality for all men. Garrison implies that not only is slavery unjust, it is also going against the American Declaration of Independence's statement of all men being created equal and instilled the same rights that they can never be denied. Garrison implies that society is demonstrating hypocrisy. Although it is written and made public to the world that everyone has the same rights and no internal differences than the other, people continue to treat African Americans as less than citizens. Even though society chooses to suppress the issue, the argument of slavery will always be inevitable. Therefore, this document is valid because it proclaims all men are created equal though, the act of slavery still exists. William Lloyd Garrison proclaims his beliefs to all abolitionists and those of the white, slave holding, population, those specifically that stand by the Declaration of Independence and all it withholds, to eliminate slavery and live by the words that are instilled in the nation.

Thomas Jefferson's letter states that slavery cannot be kept nor let go because there will always be people who continue to support it, despite it still being wrong. This document implies that slaves are not meant to be held captive because it is immoral and they might rebel. This ties back to the thesis because Thomas Jefferson was a founding father, and as the author of the Declaration of Independence, he believes all men are created equal. In the point of view of Thomas Jefferson, he believes slavery is immoral because American freedom extends to everybody, regardless of their background.

In this document, George Fitzhugh tries to explain that slavery was not as harsh as people made it to be. He says "The Negro slaves of the south [...] enjoy liberty, because they are oppressed neither by care nor labor". He uses statements that the slaves work no longer than 9 hours a day and have much free time, while the free laborer has to work longer and cannot have much free time or they would not survive through life. In the eyes of a plantation owner in the south, he will always believe that the way he treats his slaves is not wrong. He states that, ''Negro slaves of the south are the happiest'', but who would be happy being forced to work for someone you refer to as Master and watch them get rich as you live the same life everyday. George Fitzhugh is stating something that is invalid. The reason for it is because slaves didn't have the liberty that George mentions; also the slaves were treated bad for any reason, and for their work they never got paid like he mentions. George Fitzhugh blatantly defends the morality of slave owners’ treatment of slaves. By comparing the slave to the free laborers, Fitzhugh establishes a distinction between the slave and free, but poor, labor group in which the lines are clearly blurred. As a Virginian plantation owner, he cannot speak poorly of the slaves’ treatment without speaking poorly of himself. Also, his description of the work conditions the slaves endure only speak for his plantation; Virginia, one of the northern most slave states doesn’t have as hot as a climate as Texas, for example. Also taken into consideration is that his specific plantation’s land may require less time to tend. All of these factors feed into his personal point of view.

In Angelina Grimke's speech that was given at Pennsylvania Hall, it portrays how slavery was very tough throughout the years. Happiness wasn't a part of her life as well. She gives us her view of how there is no such thing as a happy slave overall the hardships and punishments they go through. It says how there is a difference between happiness and mirth. Mirth is described as amusement. I say there is a huge difference between them. So
