AI can certainly enhance the music education experience with computer accompaniment and performance feedback programs. 

Performance feedback AI was one of the first tools many teachers jumped to when our classes went virtual in 2020. Apps like SmartMusic and PracticeFirst listen to a student’s performance and provide a percentage for accuracy. These tools are helpful to students in self-led learning but only provide limited feedback to students and lack suggestions and differentiation strategies that a live teacher would have.  

One of my biggest concerns with AI as a music classroom teaching tool is the detrimental effect it has on students' mental health. According to the AACE Review, technology addiction and higher stress levels have been found in children who spend excessive time with technology gadgets Also, the nature of music education lends itself to the development of perfectionism and feelings of low self-worth, especially when the music created by a student is so unrealistically graded by the machine.

  • Debugging is achieved through self reflection and critical listening.
  • Sequencing and algorithms are our sheet music that we read.
I was surprised and excited to make these connections to concepts that are so fundamental to my curriculum already!

I like the accessibility to professional level notation software and the searchable database for songs written using the program.
