John Rankin would put a candle in his window to signal that it was safe to cross the Ohio River to his home. Slaves crossing the river followed this beacon of light to Rankin's home in Ohio. The North and the South were constantly arguing, the North liked city life, the south preferred plantation life. The South did more agriculture, unlike the North who were more industrial. The South depended on slaves to harvest cotton for them, and Abraham Lincoln tried to stop it. After he was elected president, about six countries left the Union and named Jefferson Davis as their first (and last) president. After, there is a Confederate attack on Fort Sumter, who surrendered after 34 hours. Almost everybody in Cleveland will help out the refugies showing them the way to lac Erie and cross into Canada.
