Engage with my learners to analyze and discuss about different cultures. Give my learners freedom and flexibility, as by the constructivist theory, lessons are learned best through interaction with real life experiences.

It is all the ways of life that include beliefs, customs, arts and institutions that are passed down from generation to generation.

In the story of 'Who is Irish', authored by Gish Jen, the narrator is an elderly Chinese woman living in America who also struggles to accept cultures other than her own. She is critical of other cultures and ethnic beliefs. She and her daughter, Natalie have altercations on how Natalie takes care of her household duties and how she raises her daughter. According to the protagonist, Natalie's choice and ways of doing things is not culturally correct because it is not the Chinese way.

Me! Who's Irish? I say". The protagonist portrays someone who, although is an immigrant herself, still sees other cultures and ethnic groups as outsiders and is condemnatory of others.

In the short story ‘Comrade, Heal Yourself’ Sindiwe Magona used language to make mind pictures. How did she do that? From the start of the short story, she writes “from the baby-soft feel of the touch of his hand, the velvety sheen of the skin of his face, to the perfect match of what he wore, luxurious silks and soft, lush wools – each garment quietly announcing DESIGNER.” This is clear that Magona is trying to paint a picture of how handsome and nicely dressed Masondo is in the reader’s mind. In addition, words like “mfowethu” and “broer” are used as an emphasis and give the story that township atmosphere Magona grew up in.
