Before the Gulf War it made up 60% of their GDP and 95% of their foreign trade. Then when we put an oil embargo on them their oil production dropped to about 10% they were averaging around 3.5 million barrels a day than that number took a dive to 350,000 barrels a day. The 1996 UN OFF program let them resume the production of oil but under poor management the oil industry continued to suffer.

  • The cost of arms alone was around 57.7billion. 
  • Once the war finally ended they had to pay off short term debts to western countries on high interest rates.

  • Some loans they considered necessary so they have refused to pay them
  • Another big factor on their debt is they continue to barrow more than them make so if this continus they be driven deeper and deeper into debt.

Russian leader helped him get rid of them. He was reelected in 2014. Russia also agreed to use military support with Bashar against his own people. In 2016 there were about 470,000 deaths in Syria. Many of syrian refugees leave the country to avoid the dangers of civil war.

Syrian's who don't want to be part of the war are refugees. A drought from 2006-2010 made families to move the cities and poverty was huge.
