Marco Polo was born on 1254, he was citizen of the Republic of Venice, Polo grew up in a family where both his father Niccoló and uncle Maffeo were merchants.

Although Marco Polo was born to a wealthy Venetian merchant family, much of Polo's childhood was spent parentless, and he was raised by an extended family. Polo's mother died when he was young, and his father and uncle, were in Asia for much of Polo's youth.

Even before Marco was born, the brothers had travelled extensively, setting up trading posts in Constantinople, Sudak, Crimea, and the western part of the Mongolian Empire. They even visited China.

The Polo family pushed on without them, traveling through Armenia, Persia, and Afghanistan, and following a route that went over the Pamir Mountains of Central Asia to get to China.

They sailed to Acre, and then rode on camels to the Persian port of Hormuz. The Polos wanted to sail straight into China, but the ships there were not seaworthy, so they continued overland through the Silk Road, until reaching Kublai's summer palace in Shangdu, near present-day Zhangjiakou.
