Gatsby is obsessed with the idea of being with Daisy in the same way as before. He thinks they can repeat the past although they both obviously changed, have a different mindset and live in different circumstances. He clearly romanticizes and idealizes the situation and believes everything will work out as he wants it to.

As Gatsby grew up in a very modest way of living, realising his high aspirations without regarding significantly ethical ways of doing so, it is likely that he convinced himself that he is capable of doing anything. This sort of god-like self conception is what is bringing him to the belief that he can change the past to his will. It is also likely that that conception will be crushed in the course of the book.
