As shown in the graph below, the movement of water across the membrane is more negatively affected when there is more solute concentration

In this part of the lab we took two pieces of an Elodea plant and placed them in different solutions. The picture on the left is the elodea in water and the picture on the right is the elodea in salt water. The elodea in water creates a hypotonic environment which causes the chloroplasts to be around the edges. The elodea in salt water is displaying plasmolysis making all the chloroplasts become centered since there is less water inside the cell.

Through this lab I learned that the potatoes lost mass because it was a hypotonic solution, meaning that the potato had less solutes inside it than the solute concentration. The potatoes that lost mass meant that they were in a hypertonic solution. In the elodea part of the lab, I learned that plasmolysis was occuring in the elodea cells in the salt water. Since the cells in the elodea losing water because of osmosis, it was causing the plant to shrink which made the chloroplasts pull away from the cell wall. Overall, I learned that osmosis is when water moves from a lower concentration to a high concentration which explains why the potatoes placed in high solute concentrations lost so much mass.

I learned that cells use osmosis to create equilibrium. I am curious about how the results would differ if we placed the potatoes in a different solution or placed the elodea in a different liquid. I think I performed well as the results we got for the potato lab were good. As a group, we worked well together. Everybody got their part done well and on time.
